Current INTERNET price (I just checked) for Hotel Europa, Madrid for low season (Feb) was 93 Euros = USD $83.
I sometimes think Internet prices get 'inflated' for our benefit.
One way to verify this is to FAX a room request for your dates in Spanish. Have a friend/co-worker who could do this for you? A phone call (in Spanish) would be even better. I found this to be very true when trying to reserve hotels in Mexico. A Spanish speaker gets a lower price than my request in English.....hmmm.

While you're waiting for personal recommendations, visit the following website:

www.madridman.com

Be sure to read the post titled:

Hotel Europa Madrid Price Gouge.

A fellow Elwood has learned that their Internet prices which say EUR appear to have been typed in Pesetas.

A single room is EUR 48 (not 83, or 93, or 103); Hotel Europa is supposed to correct the bad info on their website.

I stayed at the Hotel Mayor (1 block from the Plaza Mayor on Calle Mayor) last year. It was just under 60 USD for a double. The rooms (w/ private bath) were sufficient & clean. There was (may still be) construction on the plaza in front of the hotel, but they never seemed to start too early so the noise didn't bother me.

Hi,
I would highly recommend the
"Suecia" Hotel. It cost SGL/DBL ca.
EUR 130 per night incl. tax/svc/breakfast and offers the best location within the old town. On top of it, it was just recently renovated in 2000 and now in a warm but modern designer style furnished.
Next Subway station is Banco des Espana.
The hotel is not too big 128 rooms - I think you will love it
Questions?
Shain/Germany/Düsseldorf

Hi every body:

First of all I must tell you that Spain is not Mexico, where exists 'La Mordida'. So prices are the same for everyone.

In Spain, there are several offerts for some nights sponsored by travel agencies as Halcon Viajes 'Weekend Plan'(in the budget you posted, many of them 4 stars wich without plan may charged double that with it), Melia Hotels (I think it was about 5 nights = 250 euros)... Banco Hotel is another option. Try look for them and you will get real bargains, but I do not know how to point these from the States.

Hope this helps, and enjoy your trip.
Try www.bancotel.com you can check the availability, reserve online and buy the vouchers online and they fedex them to you or you can pick them up at the first hotel where you´ll be booked.

Book as soon as possible, February is full of "ferias" or conventions, and many hotels are booked or charge higher rates.
