For starters, Richard, I must say I haven't used any hotels in Jesolo. Bur I'll make an attempt to talk you out of it
To that effect, though, I need some more info to get the complete picture (and to be more effective in my arguments

What mode of transportation would you be using? a car? At what time of year are you planning to be in the area? What's your hotel budget?

Paulo

Although Paulo is more of an expert about Italy than I am, I have to admit we were pleasantly surprised by Lido di Jesolo. We (family of four) traveled to Italy last summer. For 4, hotels in Venice were more than our daily budget. We stayed at Holiday Inn Express with our mileage plus coupon (and full breakfast) for about $45.00 for four in Quarto D' Altino. While not atmospheric, it was quite adequate. Staying outside of Venice does take something away from the experience. But with our budget we couldn't pass it up. Anyway, Quarto D'Altino is in between Venice and Lido di Jesolo (via the highway). So, one night, we visited Lido di Jesolo, thinking we would take a boat ride to Venice. It was a weekday night in early summer. The place was bustling with people from many countries walking around everywhere and dancing in the streets (no special event). There was an acceptable stony beach, with those wild "squat" toilets. The community looked very middle class, and reminded us of a beach town along the Jersey shore. The kids thought they would have loved to stay in that town, instead of Quarto D'Altino. Of course,it does not have the ambience of Venice, but I think it is acceptable if you want to save money. We did not look into any hotels, but the buildings just south of the main shopping street looked pretty nice. I think there have been some comments on Rick Steve's graffiti wall about Jesolo.

Richard - On a trip in Italy in June of 97 the owner of a small family owned Hotel in the Dolomites recommended that we stay in Jesolo when we told him we were on our way to Venice. He recommended:
Hotel Avana
Via Belgio, 143 - Tel. 0421.961239
30017 Jesolo Pineta
Venezia - Italy
The Hotel was two blocks off the beach with clean comfortable rooms with a balcony for between $40-$45 per night for a double room. It was a short drive to the ferry to get to Venice. For us it was our second visit to Venice (the first time we did stay in Venice)and we did not at all feel "cheated" of the Venice experience just because we did not sleep there. One day we even arrived early before the day tourists and left for a while during mid day and went to the beach and went back in the evening to enjoy Venice after some of the crowds left. Regards - Tom
