Good evening, Patti Have stayed at two
hotels in Bologna, both within a half
block of the Pza Maggiore. The HOTEL
ROMA, via Massimo d'Azeglio, 9 is a
four star hotel with 84 rooms, have
been very satisified with their accomodations and service and their
dining room in a pinch was above ordinary.
The other is the HOTEL AL CAPPELLO RUSSO, via de Fusari, 9, actually
just out the back door of the Roma.
It is a four star hotel with 31 rooms,
but of modern design and accomodations.
Prefer the Roma. If you need a couple
of ristorantes we have used, drop me a
line and will reply promptly.
Richard of La Grange Park, IL.

patti i also highly recommend the hotel roma. its on a walking only sidestreet(the front door) and a few short steps to the central piazza. people are friendly and the continental breakfast is reasonable good. very easy to walk to any other place in the old quarter. you will love bologna and waant to return. good trip

Hi Patti,
I live in Bologna and of course I've never spent a night in a hotel... but I can give you some advices about restaurants and nice cafe it's worth trying: if you want to try the typical bolognese cuisine go to "Biagi" in Via della Grada (I can't remember the number, but this street is very short) which is supposed to be one of the best restaurants, even if it's quite expensive. Diana (via Indipendenza 24)is another good restaurant on the same level, as well as Posta, near Biagi. Trattoria da Pietro (Via de Falegnami,18) is less expensive; very nice also Osteria dei Poeti in Via de Poeti 1, and Taverna del Postiglione in Via Marchesana. There are many Wine bar too, as Godot in Via Cartolerie (at night) or Cantina Bentivoglio at the beginning of Via delle Belle Arti, where you can listen to jazz live performances; Le stanze del tenente in Via Borgo San Pietro is one of my favourite places (it's also a restaurant but it's better after dinner): it's situated in an old chapel. During the day you can try some Cafe as Zanarini in Via dell'Archiginnasio (one of the most famous shopping street) or Il Calice, Lazzarini and Rosa Rose, all in Via Clavature (a very short by-street near Via dell'Archiginnasio). If you're interested in theatre, concerts...email me, I'll be happy to help you!
PS: I think that Richard and Fred gave you a good advice about the hotel!

Adelaide

hi again. just walking the arcaded streets is a treat. the old quarter is all walkable and filled with many interesting shops. dont forget the medical school and university are there. if you look to the horizon with your back to the piazza you can barely see a church on top of the very high ridge. there are arched stairways starting from the street and they go all the way up the mountain. its a long walk but seemed to be very popular on sunday for the local residents. the view is incredible from the top and there is an old church to tour(forgot the name) there is usually a place to get a cold drink on top. worth doing for an afternoon. also within 1 hpour bus time is modena-definitly worth a day trip to see this city. good trip
