I am planning to visit Rome in mid-Sept. and planning to stay like many Fodorites recomend in the Spanish steeps area. Some sugestins on under $ 100 US in that area ? Thanks

I haven't stayed there yet, but I have a reservation at a place called the Locarno (near Piazza del Popolo/Spanish Steps) in October. It was made for me by the hiking trip company (I'm hiking in Tuscany after Rome) and I've looked into it and it sounds lovely. I think it's a little more than $100, though.

We stayed at the place that "me" mentioned, the Pensione Panda, in the spring of this year, based on a recommendation from someone else here and were quite pleased with it, considering the price for the location. We had a double room without a bathroom for only 120,000 lira (about $60) per night, which is a great price for the area near the Spanish Steps. The room was <I>very</I> small, but clean, it had a nice tiled sink and a high ceiling, and the people who worked there were very friendly. We loved walking out the door every morning onto the picturesque Via della Croce and drinking cappucinos at the nearby Pasticceria d'Angelo.
