Felix,
Yes, we have stayed at hotel Torviscas 6 years ago. It was brandnew at that time and the location was good: it was the last hotel of Playa de las Americas, so it was very quiet but not far from the city centre. I repeat, IT WAS.
We have been back in May last and we did not recognize the location! Since 1993 a lot of building activity seems to have taken place and the Torviscas is now in the middle of the hectic centre.

We have stayed in Riu Palace (brandnew, quiet, last hotel - at least in May -of Playa de las Americas) and 5 min. by taxi to the city centre. Great hotel with spacious comfortable rooms, very good service, excuisite cuisine, also 4 star but worth 5 compared to Torviscas.

By the way, we have friends who go to Torviscas twice a year and they find it OK. I think the atmosphere might be younger there.

Tenerife is a typical sun+fun island and culturally spoken there is not much to see. Its nature on the contrary is beatufiul.
I would recommend you to hire a car and to drive into the mountains upto the volcano Teide. Try to pick out a clear day. I don't know if the cable-car upto the top will be repared in the meantime (broken since 2 years!!) but even if not, the views from above are magnificent. Also the road to the volcano is beautiful with first the banana plantations, a bit higher the pine forests and at the top only rock formations with cactus etc.
If you have enough time, you might consider to hire a 4wheel drive for a "safari" on the island of La Gomera that you can reach by ferry from Los Cristianos and which has totally different nature.
Furthermore you can go whale and dolphin watching on a catamaran.

One warning: there are lots of young people on the island trying to sell time-sharing appartments and villas to tourists. They will offer you all kinds of things when you go with them to see one of their projects. For instance free taxi ride, free vacation, etc. DON'T GO with them if you don't want to loose 1/2 day or more of your vacation. These people are very frank very persistent.

Email me if you have more questions.

Have a nice holiday.

Hello Felix,
I know the hotel but not as a guest. I used to work in a hotel nearby. I can tell you that it is located right next to the Torviscas beach but you'll need to go down some steps to reach it. Once you're there you'll see a nice pathway where you can go for long walks by the sea. If you turn left you'll approach the center of Las Americas and find lots of inexpensive restaurants along the way. The view from the terrace where the swimming-pool is is very nice. The animators organise games and competitions during the day: aquagym, tennis, darts, shooting, volleyball etc. and everyone can participate. (If my good friend Susana is still working there as an animator send her my regards! She is really helpful and friendly.) There is live music 6 nights a week at a big hall downstairs for ballroom dancing. At the same time there are contests and games everynight somewhere else in the hotel. In one of the halls there used to be computers where you can get a connected to Internet!
I enjoyed visiting the little village of Masca. I would enjoy an excursion to Puerto de la Cruz, for a nice walk in its animated streets, and to La Orotava, a very old town with ancient houses. These two are in the North of the island. The sight of the Orotava valley when you approach it from the East is fantastic. I also like the atmosphere at the Sunday market in Santa Cruz. There's also a night market in a place by the sea called Los Abrigos, only Thursdays I think, where there are many good an cheap fish restaurants.
Well have fun! I hope that was of help, if you're not already gone!

Elena
