We were happy with the Hotel Berna, a block away from the station. It has older decor but was clean and comfortable. The staff were very helpful.

We found the ibis Milano Centro, a short walk from the station, adequate for an overnight stay if basic and functional is all you need.

We have found both Hotel Mythos and Smart Hotel to be perfectly adequate; both are within a few minutes' walk from Centrale.

I thought Hotel Charly was exceptional value for money, the best I've experienced in a major big city like Milan, Rome, Paris etc.

Another vote for Hotel Berna. Great hotel and fabulous breakfast buffet. I don't go to Milan that often, I wish the Berna were in Rome or somewhere I go more often as I love to stay there.

Hotel Michelangelo is much closer to the Centrale railway station than the Berna, very quiet and in the same price range (with excellent breakfast).

There's a Hilton within a very short walking distance. It's awhile since we were there so don't know prices... dont know anything about point programs etc.

I forgot about mentioning the breakfast at the Hotel Berna. It was very good.

If we are talking "close" as THE "important" factor the Excelsior is directly across the street from the station but it would be cost considerably more than the others mentioned.

Hotel Berna - cross the piazza in front of the train station, cross the street, walk one half block. I don't see how something could be much closer than that.
