In 1998, I was in Venice on a job assignment. One of the photographers I was working with was staying at the Hotel Continental (Cannaregio 166 Lista Di Spagna, 30121 Venezia. Tel: (041) 715122 RA), which is just steps from the train station. His room was small, but had a glorious view of the Grande Canal. The bathroom was also small, with no tub, just a shower. From what he stated, the room was inexpensive. I hope it is still open.

Hi Debbie:
In 1999 we stayed at the Hotel Florida a few short steps from the train station. It's a 2-star hotel and it was basic, clean and the people were friendly. The location worked out very well for the 24 hours we were in Venice as it was so close to the train station.
They have a website:
www.hotel-florida.com
and if you want to read more about our 24-hours in Venice (and maybe about the hotel - I haven't read it in a while!), go to the 1999 journal on our website:
www.davidandcarol.com
Hope this helps!
