Hotel Luxembourg,Paris-Warning

Don't let what happened to us, happen to you.

We had what we thought was a confirmed reservation at the Hotel Luxembourg, starting June 8. When we arrived, we were told our reservations had been cancelled "due to technical reasons". The desk clerk explained that we had been sent an email (it was sent after we left home). They were sorry but there was to be some sort of work done. NOTE: We asked guests who had stayed there during that period and NO work was being done to that hotel at all.

We were found rooms in a "comparable" hotel. The rooms were more expensive, blocks away from where we wanted to be, on a noisy thoroughfare, dark, and cramped. They were, however, clean and the staff tried very hard to make our stay pleasant.

Do yourself a favor. If you are holding a reservation with Hotel Luxembourg, cancel it before they do. You'll have the luxury of time and will be able to choose for yourself. I would ask Fodors to seriously consider whether they want to continue to recommend such a hotel. We expect Fodors to recommend establishments that can be relied upon to be honest and forthright.

Yvette,

Sorry to hear about that; what a terrible experience! For future reference, exactly which hotel was it? There are several with "Luxembourg" or some variant in the name. We have stayed at the Hotel Jardins des Luxembourg before, and enjoyed it, and I hope that this is not the one that treated you so shabbily!

Sorry to hear about your experience; it is tales like these that make me so paranoid.... What sort of confrimation did you received from the hotel?

When making a reservation, I always request a fax confirmation, and usually fax or e-mail a response to that fax to let the hotel know it was received. If the reservation is made far in advance, I also call the hotel again a month or so before I leave to make sure they still have it. And I bring hard copies of my faxes and/or e-mails along with me. This may sound like overkill, but at least it gives me some peace of mind and allows me to remedy a problem in advance, instead of having the sort of unpleasant surprise that Yvette experienced.

Thank you for the commisserations...The hotel in question is Hotel Luxembourg, 4, rue de Vaugirard.

I had in hand an email confirmation with a confirmation number on it. It's not that the hotel denied they had sent us a confirmed reservation, it's that they chose to cancel it 2 DAYS before our arrival! I had copies of ALL pertinent paperwork with me (I never travel without them). I doubt that even calling ahead would have changed the situation.

Ok, well this is just great! I have reservations for this hotel in the beginning of October and now I'm concerned. Does anyone have anything good to say about this hotel? Or should I start looking for another one. Just yesterday I was trying to fax my signed confirmation to them but it would not go, said their fax was busy (tried several times). Has anyone out there ever stayed at this hotel?
Thanks Yvette for the info. Deena

Just in case anyone isn't sure, Yvette's hotel has a different address from the popular Hotel Jardin du Luxembourg.

I don't believe that Fodor's recommended this hotel (at least not recently) as I couldn't find Hotel Luxembourg listed on Fodor's recommended list, only Hotel Jardin du Luxembourg.

We had exactly the same experience the day AFTER you, June 9! We had made reservations in April. When we arrived, (by taxi because the hotel had also screwed up our shuttle reervation!)we were told that our room would not be available until the following day because of "renovations". As I posted in another reply in this forum, this was the worst possible news we could get after an awful trip just getting to Paris! Because we had to take a taxi, we got the driver from hell. He had agreed to take us for$40 us. When we arrived he demanded more. He was given another $2-3 and sent away by the receptionist at Hotel Luxembourg.

We were then sent to the Hotel Trianon Rive Gauche. Very nice staf but small, cramped and dark rooms. 10 minutes after arrriving in our room, our phone rang. It was the receptionist saying a taxi driver was downstairs wanting more money!!

We told her to talk to the hotel Luxembourg who had already settled the matter, we thought! And we thought it was the least they could do after screwing up our shuttle AND hotel reservation. 10 minutes later the phone rang again. The taxi driver was still there and refused to go away until he was paid more money. This was so outrageous! My husband went downstairs and threw a $5 bill at him and told him to get out and not come back.

Did the Hotel Luxembourg try to make amends or make our stay any better? No. Would I stay there again. No. The room was small, no a/c. Breakfast was good and it was a good location. But we ended up staying at the Hotel Serotel Lutece on our return to Paris a week later. This was a really nice hotel and well located. LARGE room, a/c, elevator, garage parking, nice staff, quiet rooms overlooking a courtyard, separate toilet and bath/shower facilities, minibar. We would love to stay here again.

If you are booked at the Luxembourg, try to find something else. On our last day there (stayed only 2, cut our stay short) we felt like Branson, Mo had arrived when we went down to breakfast! Alot of loud older Americans.

Good Luck!
