Have stayed at the Concordia, right off San Marco square, and the Rialto, next to the Rialto Bridge. Both are good and have been renovated within the last couple of years. Check with a travel agent on prices.

The Hotel Monetcarlo,50 yards from San Marco, 5 min. from The Rialto. Around $100.00/night for a double with a/c,private bath and breakfast. You can book it through Best Western International. Don't waste your time looking for anything else, you will really enjoy this hotel!
We loved the Pensione Accademia in Dorsoduro. 1058 Fondamenta Maravegie, a short walk from the Accademia bridge (and museum) and the vaporetto stop. Very quiet neighborhood. Phone: 041-52.10.188
Not a really big hotel;has been the Russian consulate, a private palazzo, etc. over the years. Our room (51) was in the extension, with windows on two sides overlooking the quiet canal. Heaven.

I have stayed at the Locanda Sturion, near the Rialto Bridge. There are three flights of extremely steep marble stairs to climb to get there, but the view from many of the rooms and the breakfast room is of the Grand Canal.
