Hello Bobbie,

Did you end up staying at Hotel Eremo Gaudio? I tried emailing them and my email got returned, and tried faxing them, but I have not received a response. If you did stay there, or anyone else did, I would love to hear about it. I am considering staying there in May 2002.
I was wondering how far it is from town to the hotel lifts. Also, what type of a walk would it be to the lifts (steap, poor footing, good solid ground etc.)? I am wondering this because I am travelling with my Mother and if the hotel will be difficult for her to get to, then I will stay at another one. Also, do they have arrangements so you could get a shuttle to Milan Airport?
Thank you very much,
Natasha

There is train service from the Varenna station to Milano Centrale (connecting to the Malpensa Bus). Alternatively, there is a direct bus service to Malpensa from Menaggio (departing at 6:30 a.m.), across the Lake from Varenna. However, you would probably have to take a private boat across at that time of morning.

The hotel is closed until March 28, which is perhaps why they are not responding. If the location is not suitable, I highly recommend the three-star Hotel Milano bed and breakfast, right in the old town, with a marvellous view of the lake from one of the four front-facing (westward) rooms (these rooms get full sun and are very hot during the summer, and there is no a/c, so some prefer the cooler side-fraing rooms) Prices are comparable to the Eremo Gaudio.

GAC,

Thanks for the information. I actually just received a fax back from Eremo Gaudia. You are right, they are about the same price as Albergo Milano. They say they are about 10 minutes from town. I will try and get a reservation at Albergo Milano. Thanks for the information!

I visited the Hotel Milano but did not stay there. If I were to return to Varenna, I would not hesitate booking there, particularly in the Spring, in one of the rooms with a frontal view of the Lake! The owner is very cordial and accommodating. The property's entrance is on a narrow alleyway perched above the lakefront. There is a steep flight of stone steps leading up to the main street (although there are other ways to reach the hotel which avoid the steps). Breakfast (optional) is served on a lovely terrace with a full frontal and unobstructed view of the Lake. Many people much prefer Varenna to Menaggio and even Bellagio because it is much less commercialized, far quieter, and more "natural". There is excellent transportation to the other Lake towns, and nearly hourly direct trains to Milano from the Varenna Station. The Milano has only 12 rooms, so book early!

Natasha: my mistake, I re-checked the guidebooks and discovered that the Hotel Milano in Varenna has only 8 rooms, 4 of which face the Lake head-on. Of these 4, two have large terraces and the other two smaller terraces (but larger rooms). The owner's name is Amelia.
