Hi
Here's my personal take on this.
During my travels I've stayed in places that have run most of the hotel spectrum, from rooms with a shared bathroom above a pub, to a luxurious Four Seasons hotel recently.

If I were planning a hotel budget of 185 euro, the discount rate at the Cipriani would have to be a lot less than 400 euro to seriously tempt me.
Maybe 300 would tip me in that direction, but not more, but that's my budget, not yours. As others have said, the breakfasts and drinks and tips and such would certainly increase the daily rate by a substantial amount.

I'm sure the Cipriani is a great hotel (I've only ever dined there) but to tell the truth I wouldn't want to have to take the launch back and forth all the time, though it's fun at dinner time. If I were picking any hotel in Venice, I'd pick the Bauer Palazzo or the Gritti.

Go to dinner and drinks at the Hotel Cipriani...I am sorry that I did not go when I was there years ago. My next trip there I will not make the same mistake. I stayed in a small quaint hotel across from a canal, it was very nice. Have fun!

Thank you for all the terrific advice and entertainingly lively debate! Please don't grade me, NYCFS; I make no claims of intelligence. Rufus, I should have mentioned that 185 euro is at the top of what I've paid for a hotel and is not what I consider "budget". Thank you to those who reminded me of the associated costs of a stay at a luxury hotel, especially since it's set on it's own island. I like the one night stay idea, but my boyfriend isn't so keen on that. Perhaps we'll just pop over for a drink to check it out, if that's allowed. We did go for the deal offered of two nights at 290 euro a night at the Hotel Excelsior in Rapallo, so we'll end our trip with a special splurge and my first stay at a five star joint. I hope they allow backpacks and tevas. (kidding)

There's a not terribly subtle difference between 'I'm not stupid' and 'I never make mistakes'.

I could go into my qualifications to prove the former, but I was always taught that boasting is vulgar.

BTW, were you considering 'traveller' and 'empathise' to be wrong? Cos if so I want my paper re-grading (did I get the idiom right?).
