hotel booking resources
Help again! There are some great recommendations for hotels in this forum
but where do I find the best web sites to
view hotels and make reservations? Also
I understand some have better rates for
hotels than others. We are new retired
travelers and really appreciate the help
of this formum.

Here's a starter list of websites dealing with accommodations that I've used extensively. Do check the websites for the National and Regional tourist offices. You'll find links from each to sites dealing with accommodations.

Austria
www.aeiou.at
www.atnet.co.at/tourism/vienna
www.salzburginfo.at
www.salzburg.nehotels.com

Belgium:
www.hotelstravel.com/belgium.htm
Hotel Ter Duinen, Brugges website

France:
www.paris-hotel.com
www.paris.org/hotels
www.paris-touristoffice.com
www.relaischateaux.fr/default.html
www.hotelboulevard.com
www.france-hotel-guide.com
www.adx.fr/hotels/anglais.htm
www.france.com:80/travel/hotels/phg.html
www.france-hotel-guide.com
www.globe-market.com

General

www.karenbrown.com

Germany

www.bavaria.com/travel/

Great Britain
www.beduk.co.uk - Accommodations in United Kingdom
www.kgp-publishing.co.uk - B&Bs in London, Great Britain; self catering cottages
www.infotel.co.uk discounts off rack rates
www.b-and-b-online.com - Bed and Breakfasts
www.b-and-b-scotland.co.uk

Back again following a short interruption from our Clumber Spaniel who reminded me it was time for his evening walk.
Check the website:
www.webcrawler.com/travel/countries/europe

You'll find all of the European countries listed; click on one or on a city or area within the country, then scroll down to "Specialty Guides" and you'll find a link to "Where to Stay" which will drive you to any number of websites dealing with accommodations.

A couple of cautionary hints: Make no reservations via the internet unless the site is secure. You don't want to broadcast your credit card account number. Instead, send a fax and ask for a fax confirmation. Once you've decided on a hotel or inn or B&B, it might be to your advantage to contact it directly for more favorable rates than those posted to the website. Website rates are not always the lowest. With any person to person contact with European hotels, recognize the time difference. (If you call at 6PM Eastern time, you'll probably get no one other than an uniformed night clerk who's on duty at midnight or later). Keep an eye out for links to special promotions. For example, London's Colonnade Hotel recently underwent an ownership change and complete refurbishment and is offering rooms normally priced at 155 pounds a night for 99 pounds through early September.

Barbara,
You can't imagine how much help I received from this forum for our recent trip to London and Paris!

Another suggestion is to use a good search engine (we use WebFerret) to search for each hotel by name. We found a great site for our hotel, with a promotion that saved us several hundred dollars. We called the hotel, and they honored the discounted rate although our dates were not the ones listed.
