I stopped in there in March when I was in Venice and was favorably impressed by the nicely-decorated, well-kept formal lobby, and the concierge. I've heard the rooms have been renovated but haven't seen them. I checked it out because it's one of the hotels available in an air/hotel package offered off-season by Alitalia, and I like the central location of the campo it shares with the Gritti Hotel--five minutes away from San Marco, but quieter--and the fact that it's down the block from a vaporetto landing.

We stayed at Hotel Ala for 4 nights in 1999 -- it was a great location and a good hotel. Breakfast was above average. Spend a little extra and get the suite on the top floor (only accommodation on that floor)-- you're then on the rooftops of Venice and have your own "apartment" (bedroom, living room, bath). We loved it and would stay there if we ever return to Venice. ---so many places to see---so little time!

Doug- we stayed there years ago and the individual rooms were NOT decorated nicely at all--make sure the rooms have truely been renovated otherwise I'd stay at the FLora Hotel just off St.MArks Sq--pretty Italian handpainted furn. and murano crystal chandalier in room-small baths- but very charming.
