Hostel/cheap accommodation Rome/Venice

I have an opportunity to stay with friends for a couple of weeks near Florence (after being on the "road" for 3 months)..I am pretty broke! I would really like to take the opportunity while there to see Venice and Rome and maybe stay one night in each. Anyone know of a very cheap place to stay in either of these cities? A hostel would be fine. Also do I have to make reservations now? or can I take my chances through the week? Thanks a lot...everyone has been great to me for the past 3 months on my travels...what an experience!

In Rome try the Hotel Des Artistes, which is near the Termini train station. The hotel is cheap, clean, friendly, and I believe one floor is set aside for hostelers.

There are other posts about the hotel - type in the name and you'll find them.

The Hotel des Artistes sounds perfect - exactly what I'm looking for! Thanks Martin. Now if I can just find such a place in Venice, I can go to bed happy! Please anyone...you'll make my mom happy too knowing I have a place to rest my head!!!

In Venice the only hostel that I have heard used/recommended by anyone I know is Archie's House, 041/720-884, Rio Terra San Leonardo (in Cannaregio section). I believe you might have to call in advance though to make a reservation.

I can't give you any specifics but i have read that there is convent housing available in rome, very clean and reasonable and many have private bath.
