Milano is a pretty unromantic city, but I would look for somewhere around Via Brera, behind La Scala, which is about the nearest to romantic Milano gets.

Have a look at www.itwg.com
I just book a hotel near the metro and only cost me US$85(inc. breakfast and tax). But it is a 2 star hotel.

Milan is not at the top of most people’s ‘romantic city list’, however I happen to LIKE Milano. You really only need a day or two but I found my short visit there (night & day before returning to States) to be quite pleasant. I stayed at a hotel that was very well located, on a quiet street yet close to sites, food, etc.
It was the “London Hotel” on Via Rovello, close to the Cairoli metro stop. I stayed in a single for 135,000 lire – price for a double room runs around 210, 000 lire (about $100 US dollars). E-mail - [email protected].
However I wouldn’t describe this hotel as a honeymoon spot.

Below is an accommadation that I’d considered (higher than what I wanted to pay) and it sounds like it may be more in line with your needs. I’ve used Karen Brown’s guidebooks in choosing B&B’s in Italy and found her to be accurate & reliable in her descriptions.

========================================
Antica Locanda dei Mercanti's web site.
http://www.locanda.it/

Per Karen Brown, (www.karenbrown.com)
The Antica Locanda dei Mercanti is an absolute treasure. For the price, you would expect minimum accommodations but, instead, all of the guestrooms are outstanding. Each shows the loving touch of Paola Ora and although no two are alike, they all have a charming, tasteful, refined elegance. There are no TVs or mini bars in the rooms, but you will find direct-dial telephones, exceedingly comfortable mattresses, lots of electrical outlets, good reading lights, beautiful bouquets of fresh flowers, and marble bathrooms with hairdryers. At the top of the list are four air-conditioned rooms with private rooftop garden terraces.

ANTICA LOCANDA DEI MERCANTI
Manager: Paola Ora
Via San Tomasco, 6, 20121 Milan, Italy
Tel: (02) 80 54 080, Fax: (02) 80 54 090
E-mail:[email protected]
16 rooms, Double: Lire 210,000-400,000*
*Breakfast not included
Open all year, Credit cards: all major
No restaurant, breakfast only
Heart of Milan, between the Duomo & the Castello
Region: Lombardy, Michelin Map 428
Any chance you won't stay in Milan, butgo to lake Como? We stayed at the hotel Imperial (go to www.bestwestern.com and look up Como)- it was wonderful! We were supposed to stay in Milan for 2 days after that, but drove into the city, found it rather commercialized (we're from S. Calif and rather overdone on commercialization) and so we cancelled our reservations and kept driving south.

Presuming you're renting a car, the Milan airport is way north of the ity, so you're part way to Como already. I wish we had stayed at the lake longer! Not crowded, not commercialized, lovely vistas. Here's the info on L. Como:
Went straight to Lake Como fm. Milano airport- wish we had planned to stay there longer. It was gorgeous. Big like L. Tahoe. Belagio was pretty touristy, but we stayed down near Como. After 2 days there, we went to Milan, couldn’t find our hotel, canceled our reservations, drove down through Bologna and Parma- all were kind of big, busy, boring cities, from what we saw.
Como: 23/24 May Como
Name: Best Western Grand Hotel Imperial
Address: Via Durini, Molstrasio (Como)
Price and amenities: $145 incl tax. Lake View, King Bed, full breakfast, check in 2 pm, check out noon
Phone: 031 346111 Best wishes for a wonderful trip!

I personally did not find Milan fun or friendly. Although it is a beautiful destination if you like churches and Gucci! I'm 30 and much preferred Venice for a romantic city or Rome. Italy is our favorite destination. We stayed at the Savoy close to the train station.
