Honeymoon in Greece
My fiance and I our trying to plan our honeymoon and are very interested in Greece. The problem is we are getting married at the end of October. Is early November a terrible time to visit the Greek islands?

Hi Ruthie! If by ' Greek islands' you mean Cyclades, especially Santorini and Mykonos, then yes, a really bad idea! You can't get a true picture of the smaller islands, as nearly everything will be closed, local transport minimal, if it's wet there's nothing to do, etc. etc! BUT you say you're interested in GREECE – the larger islands are beautiful year round: we were in Irakleio, Crete for two weeks over New Year and January and it was wonderful! Lots to see, and easy to get to other towns, or up into the mountains, by bus. Or why not stay on the mainland? Winter is a great time to visit Athens: the crowds have gone and you can look at the ancient sites or exhibits in museums, in comfort. You could take a day trip by boat to one of the nearby islands like Aegina or Hydra, or spend a few days in Nauplio, a beautiful Venetian town about 2½ hours (by bus) from Athens, close to some of the most important ancient sites in Greece, if you're interested in seeing those. The possibilities are endless! The weather can be unpredictable in November, but there was plenty of sun this year. Greeks have a special welcome for winter visitors - I'm sure you'll have a wonderful honeymoon!

I wouldn't paint quite so bleak a picture of the islands in November as NikolettaG. It can get windy and chilly at night but a sweater or light jacket is probably all you'd need. Granted, outdoor dining at night isn't all that pleasant when the wind is blowing. Average temperatures in November range from 60-68'F. The days are mostly sunny. Average rainfall on Santorini for November is about 2 inches, and that's in a "wet" year. Water temperature is around 66'F. Although it's true many hotels, bars and shops will be shutting down for the winter you will always be able to find some open. The island's bus system is a year-'round operation that cuts back after the tourist season to a shorter day, but the buses still run about once an hour until 8:30 PM or thereabouts. Taxis are available all year until around midnight. To be fair, if you're looking for a lively environment then Santorini isn't likely to give you that in November, but if you want a special and romantic spot for a quiet honeymoon then I say go, stay in Oia and enjoy one of the most beautiful islands in the world.

If I were going to Greece on my honeymoon (CONGRATULATIONS!) in November, and wanted to go to an island, I would go to Crete. As the southernmost island in Greece, it is also the warmest. It is also very very beautiful, and because it is large, there are many things to do there. One November we spent a couple weeks in Crete, using Chania as our base, and had a wonderful time (we went there to get away from the rain and ever-present wind we were experiencing on the northern Aegean island where we have a home).
NikolettaG's suggestions and observations about travelling in Greece in November are absolutely accurate.
Although Santorini is a lovely island, it is not where I would choose to spend a November honeymoon in Greece.
