Hogwarts Express
I will be visiting the Highlands in October this year with my thirteen year old son and my husband. My son would love to take a ride on the steam train featured in the Harry Potter movies. (I would too!) Can anyone tell me about this train ride - e.g. where does it start/ end? how much does it cost?

here is the website for the steam train. www.westcoastrailway.co.uk/ The Jacobite train looooong predates Harry Potter but whether you ride it for Potter mania or because of the amazing scenery - it is worth it.
Unfortunately the steam train only runs through Sept. But regular trains run the route year round.

Oh yes - it is DEFINITELY worth it. You go over the same viaducts, and through the same amazing country. And you don't get soot in your eyes
Once I took it in November and at that time of year you arrive at Mallaig right at sunset so it is even more amazing.
But at any time of year it is truly a wonderful train ride.
