Hofbrauhaus

I'm going to Germany in May(end)do I need to make a reservation for the Hofbrauhaus? And if I do where do I call or can I email somewhere?

No reservation, just go in and sit in any empty seat. People share tables there so even if someone is sitting at a table and there are extra seats you can sit down anywhere. Have fun!

The Hofbrauhaus is a gigantic beer hall, and I've never heard that they take reservations. The tables are all lined up picnic bench style and you just hop in where ever there is a space, (meet some terrific people that way too) the only time I would imagine you having difficulty getting in is during October fest, but in May you should be fine. I've been there several times and never had any problems.

Sondra,
No reservations are required at any of Munich's beer halls. You'll probably find that the bulk of beer drinkers at the Hofbrauhaus are American tourists. If you'd like to experience a beer hall with one of Munich's nicest beer gardens and one of its finest beers, go to Augustiner-Keller at 52 Arnulfstrasse. For the largest beer hall in the world, drop in to Mathaser Bierstadt at 5 Bayerstrasse near the train station. You'll end up drinking Lowenbrau there.

Sondra, Wes is right as usual, but I'm one of those guys that still enjoys the place, tourists and all.

What we usually do is go upstairs in the dining room and have dinner, then we go downstairs for pretzels, beer and oom-pah-pah. The food upstairs is not bad, and it's not quite as crazy as the first floor sometimes gets and you can have dinner in relative peace.

There's nothing quite like the Hofbrauhaus on a Friday or Saturday night.

I would not recommend eating at Hofbrauhaus (except of course the pretzels). We found it difficult to eat there, as everyone at each table is on a different schedule...some are eating, some are exiting, some are smoking, etc.
We had a great time there & got some great party photos taken, but I prefer going for the atmosphere and the bier.
j.

Why to go to the "Hofbräuhaus"?
there are many peaceful and beautyful beergardens in Munich, so you never will need this place; or you go upstairs on to the first floor or in the beergarden at the backside of the Hofbräuhaus.
I will suppose the Augustiner in the pedestrian zone with a lovely small beer-garden inside, very calm and comfortable.
I agree with both Wes and Lee. I've enjoyed both the Mathaser and the Hofbrayhous. The Hofbrauhous is more touresty but you'll also have less problems with the language. As I remember both of them have 3 floors, one for serious drinking and singing, one for dining and one for dancing. Both very enjoyable. Have a great time.
Art
Why go to the Hofbrauhaus? It's crowded and full of tourists. In fact, why go to the Eifel Tower, Big Ben or Disney World? They're full of the same.

I again agree with Wes, do the Augustiner-Keller Been to Munich three times and always gravitate there. Must be the Beer and the ompah ompah band.
