Okay SO SORRY to ask again, but the advice here has me reconsidering other options. Please let me know if this sounds more doable. We drive from Lancaster to Romsey/Southampton on a Sunday next month. Nothing on the agenda, want to take our time. Looking on the map, we could detour M40 and either take a) A429 through center of Cotswolds or b) detour through Stratford Upon Avon and take B4632 through Prestbury. Then come south and enter Romsey from the west.
Is there a preference for which of those 2 routes? Looking for scenic drive and nice area for lunch, perhaps even a picnic somewhere. Doubt we would get out for a walk if we come through on this day. THANK YOU!

either route would put you through bits of nice-ish countryside -- and each would take between 6 and 7 hours depending on the traffic. Neither would be much of a detour actually.
I would NOT go via Stratford though if you mean going into the city because there will be traffic and parking issues.
If it was me -- I'd stick to the M5, then take the A40 east into the Cotswolds. Maybe stop in Burford for lunch and a walk around the town - or if you are making good time you could meander around some of the nearby villages.
