high speed internet
Help! My husband can't leave work completely. He will bring his lap top with him and needs to find a hotel with high speed internet or are there wi-fi stations throughout the city that he can hook up too? Are they expensive?
Thanks for any advise.

The Sofitels in Paris almost all offer high speed Internet access, although you need to check with each hotel to be sure.
The prices of the Sofitels vary, but you could count on somewhere in the $175 to $225 range if you book an Internet special rate from their web site (www.sofitel.com). Some of the Sofitels are quite beautiful, comfortable hotels and I would put most of them above the Meridien Montparnasse (we had relatives staying there last summer and while the room was good for a family, there was nothing particularly attractive about it).

Ditto Le Meridien Etoile. We stayed there a while back and it was just a large highrise hotel and nothing was charming about it. And our room was circa late 1970's decor. Hopefully they've remodeled those rooms by now.
Most of the Sofitels look so much nicer than the Meridiens. Look at Sofitel's website for Paris locations and I'm sure there are some locations that feature the high speed internet.

I'm sure many of the Paris Sofitels are very nice and have been reviewed to that effect. However, the TripAdvisor and other reviews of the Sofitel Porte de Sevres are quite negative, and reviews for the Sofitel Forum Rive Gauche are mixed (but then so are the Le Meridien reviews). (Those two Sofitels and those two Le Meridiens often come up on Priceline.)
I recall that the Sofitel Bercy has had excellent reviews, though, and it's a pretty new building - from 2000 or so, I think.

AA Frequent Flyer, thanks for the link to wi-fi sites. Sanibel, I just plugged in my apartment address in Paris, in the 6eme, and got a list of 76 sites with wi-fi nodes within a 1 mile radius. Lots and lots of hotels, large and small, some cafés, and...ta da...McDonalds. If wi-fi will do for your husband, he should have no problem at any of these sites, but I'd check with the hotel you select before committing, just to make sure.

According to an email I received from the Accor Group, *all* Accor Hotels throughout France (Ibis, Novotel, Sofitel, etc.) will have wi fi access by the end of 2004.
My own experience with Sofitels in the 8th and 16th arrond. has been overwhelmingly positive. Some of the negative TripAdvisor reviewers disliked the hotel's location, not the hotel itself. I probably wouldn't be happy with a hotel stuck at the edge of the 15th myself, no matter how nice the rooms. That's why I don't do Priceline!
