London is my favorite city and I fell asleep in our comfortable zero gravity chair! I just remember seeing some greenery. But I'm NOT going to sleep through the Paris show tonight. I'll watch via our tv tuner card for the PC [called Win TV]. Comcast cable plugs into it-that way you can be on the internet and watch TV at the same time. I'm not TOO addicted!

Where in Paris did they end up buying, what kind of apartment was it, and how much did they spend?
In a different twist, American style homes are becoming trendy in the UK. Shows like Desperate Housewives and Brits who own holiday homes in Florida are some of the reasons. The International Herald Tribune has an interesting article about it:

I must say, those homes in Kent sound tempting! I wonder if you can get screens on windows??

Hi BT,
>Where in Paris did they end up buying, what kind of apartment was it, and how much did they spend?<
They bought the apt with the terrace near Pigalle. They then tore out the second WC and shower and enlarged the kitchen (figure about 75kE for that).
They didn't tell the price, but I did some internet searching. My guess is around 600k E.
Keeping in mind that Location is a major factor in the price of housing, it looks to me that the price of an apartment in a major city (NYC, London, Paris, Rome, Berlin) is about the same number of dollars, euros or pounds.
Here in my small town in GA, $800k will get you a fully renovated 10 room antebellum mansion on a couple of acres or about 6000 sq ft of new house on 1-2 acres on Lake Oconee.

The Paris show is the only one I have gotten to see. One thing I don't get...did they really see more places and only show the 3? We both wondered why they felt compelled to buy any of them based on their comments. I liked the third one, but I would not have lived in that neighborhood. Also, I never heard how much they paid...that would be interesting to know!

House Hunters always features three of the properties that the person looks at. It's only a half hour show so they couldn't go through every property that people look at, so they highlite three of them. Last night I was kind of wondering about the neighborhood having been in that area. But from comments from people on various travel boards, I have never heard that the area is considered dangerous, just "interesting". I loved the apartment.

I was surprised that the apartments in Paris cost less than the apartments in Barcelona (at least I remember them costing less) and the apartments in Barcelona all needed work.
Anyway, last nights episode was a bit like nails on a blackboard -- that woman was soooooooo whiny. Her husband is obviously a saint.

I watch this show a lot...usually the producers seem to tell the people to have some positive comments for the most part... after all these people are trying to sell the houses..however for once the woman said what she really thought...so what?? she was not being shown apartments by a french person and she is an american and evidently has not looked for apartments there before...her husband was more quiet, tactful but agreed with her evidently as they did tear out the bath...if you are working with an agent you need to express what you want or you're wasting their time......I thought the women from britain seemed fake.

It was funny but out of all the episodes, I liked the Paris apartment and the London apartment. The most quirkly funloving people seemed to be the British guy in London and the couple in Barcelona. I honestly cannot see how the woman from Portland would ever get used to living in France with her "Oh so American expectations." Of all the places I saw I was not impressed with Montreal and Barcelona (maybe I couldn't see the diamond in the rough!) I would love to see more House Hunters International in other places, particularly more small town settings like in Normandy, Provence or Ireland.

I don't recall them stating the exact price of the apartment but I believe that the 500,000 to 600,000 euro figures were mentioned from time to time. I was getting the impression that the half million and up were the norm as it was in the other cities.

Question? Someone else here commented as did my daughter this morning who saw the Paris episode last night.
It is true that in order to get a mortgage in France you have to go through an extensive medical exam? What is that all about? Seems strange. I can't help but wonder. If you have a health serious help problem does that mean you cannot get a mortgage in France?
Wouldn't the lender in France hold the first mortgage on the property purchased in France. If the buyer of the property died or became so ill they could not pay their mortgage would not the lender be able to forclose as they can here in the US?
Or are French laws so different that this is not possible? I know inheritance laws are quite different compared to the US. Just curious as was my daughter.
