Help with York

I too had thought that maybe a day trip from York to Leeds makes more sense. Half an hour on the train is very quick (particularly compared to massive long distances in Australia where I live). It means I wouldn't see as much but it's one less hotel check in/out. Travelling on the train is also much easier without luggage.
Harrogate looks lovely. I have to decide if day trips would work. It is nice to have a hotel in town so I can see more, drop back to the room for a rest, drop parcels, whatever. I like to see things at a leisurely pace so a couple of nights would be nice. I don't think I'm going to get to Whitby.
Coal Drops Yard is a place I'd like to explore. A restaurant called the German Gymnasium? I guess there's a story. On my last visit to London I was definitely going to see the repurposed Battersea Power Station. I ran out of time so next year it's on my short list.
