Help with Venice Accommodation near Piazza San Marco

Change of plans- was staying near airport for an early flight (end of October)The flight has been cancelled. Have managed to get an earlier flight, the night before so now thinking of a hotel in good position to make the most of our stay in Venice. Anyone have any recomendations?

Maybe San Marco is not the best location? Near a vaporetto stop to catch to airport in the evening and good location for sight seeing. Would the area near Rialto be better?

Here's a great site for information for getting to the airport.
Does this help make your decision?

Try the Hotel do Pozzi, about a block from Piazza San Marco along the main shopping route, but tucked into a nice couryard. Nice breakfast, modern, but a little on the small side (as are most European hotel rooms).

We like Hotel Wildner, just past San Marco, with nice views towards Guidecca and across St Marks basin. Not fancy, no elevator, but otherwise fairly nice. Very easy to find, overlooking the Alilaguna dock, which can be a plus for first time visitors.
