Hi everyone

My wife and I are spending 1 month inter-railing in Europe during July this year. Following some advice we have come up with the following plan. flying from Scotland to

Rome 4 days (day trip to Pompei)
Florence 5 days (trips to Siena,pisa, san Gimignano)
Venice 2 days
Milan 1 day
Zurich 2 days
Munich 3 days (trip to Neuschwanstein)
Vienna 3 days
Prague 4 days (trips to Plzen & Cesky Krumlov)
Berlin 2 days
Paris 4 days

we intend taking the overnight train from Munich to Vienna and Berlin to Paris

I would be grateful for an views on the following questions

1) Do you think we are staying to long in some places - my wife and I are not really into Art,Museums etc - we are interested in famous landmarks,wine,beer, nightlife etc. Where are the best places for us in italy etc

2) Has anyone any good recommendations for hotels,hostels etc looking at around 90 euros per night (cheaper would be great)

3) Have we missed out on any good places?

Hi,

To be honest, I have not visited all of your destinations, so I can't comment on everything. Of the places we've been to, your amount of time may or may not work, depending on how much of that particular place you would actually like to see.

For example, Neuschwanstein can take most of a day, so that leaves little for Munich itself. I like driving from Schwangau through to the Wieskirche in Steingaden, then Oberammergau, Linderhof Castle, Ettal, the Zugspitze and finally, Garmisch. This is a beautiful area. While Munich requires at least three days, I think.

We were in Rome for eight days, taking one day trip to Pompeii on the high speed train (to Naples) and still didn't see everything that we wanted to in Rome, and we did a lot.

Prague is in that same category. We were there for seven days and although we also wanted to get to Cesky Krumlov, we never made it, spending all of our time in Prague instead. Great city.

On our last trip to Paris, we spent five days there and came back exhausted. We caught an 'E-Saver' out of Pittsburgh for $175.00 each and couldn't pass it up.

See what I'm getting at? You have a month and it sounds like a lot of time, but it will seem like a blur. Think it over and see if this is what's best for you. Good luck.

Have you figured in travel time between cities?

Personally, with 30 days, I would add Amalfi Coast with Pompeii and eliminate Milan, Vienna, and Zurich:

3 days Amalfi Coast (w/Pompeii)
4 days Rome
3 days Florence (w/side trips - I would skip Pisa and do Sienna & S.G. in a day)
3 days Venice
3 days Munich (w/side trip)
5 days Prague (w/side trips)
2 days Berlin
5 days Paris

With 3 additional stops, you'll be wasting so much more time uprooting, traveling, checkin in, resettling, etc. By lessening the number of base locations, you'll actually have more time to sightsee. Especially since it will be July and the large crowds will make the trains/traveling even more exhausting. Plus, for sights/museums, the lines will be longer, cutting down your "free" time by additional waiting.

But that's just my thinking on it.

Many thanks for your advice - We might drop 1 or 2 places. Have'nt really thought to much about the travel etc yet ira because we are going to try and be flexible but i know that some of the journeys will be very long. Will look into the Amaifa coast but we don't want to spend to much time in italy.
