Help with Monterossa Hotel

My husband and I, with two other couples, will be visiting Cinque Terra the end of October, after much debate we have deciided to stay in Monterossa. We are considering two moderately priced hotels, Albergo degli Amici and Albergo Marina. We would appreciate any comments from Fodorites who have stayed at either hotel. Thanks!

Jopat, just returned from Italy yesterday. We spend 3 nights at the Marina 6/30 - 7/02 in Monterossa. We had a quad room since we traveled with our teenage daughters. First after visiting all of the CT towns, in my opinion Monterosso is by far the best town to stay. More to offer in terms of restaurants, atmosphere with the benefit of visiting other locations. Staying in the old part of town is also a good choice. The Marina and Amici are located next door to each other on a quiet street of the main walk way. Our room at the Marina was small...queen bed with two bunkbeds. However, small rooms is what I believe you will get in most accomodations in the CT. My family liked the Marina -- our room was very clean, our bed was comfortable, room had a safe and the air conditioning in our room kept it cool. Our bathroom was fine -- clean, nice shower with plenty of hot water. They offered a nice breakfast, staff was friendly. The Marina offered a 10% discount if paying by cash. We didn't spend much time in our room -- we were pleased with accomodations and thought we received good value for our money. Let me know if you have other questions.

Thanks, KenP, for your prompt reply. We were wondering if the hotel had a common area, such as a patio, where we could all meet and perhaps have a glass of wine before dinner? Thanks, again.

Jopat, the Marina has an outdoor lemon tree garden on the 4th floor (top of hotel). They serve dinner in this area if you choose to dine there. I don't believe it is staffed outside of dinner time for drinks etc...it did have a bar area. Never ventured up during the day. 50 steps from the hotel is a small bar with tables outside...very nice. Another 50 steps and you have your choice of atleast 6 other bar / restaurants. The main walkway area has a good choice of restaurants to select and is less than a 2 minute walk from the Marina and Amici.

I have stayed at Villa Steno in a triple room this past June. Also stayed at La Poesia B&B in 2004 which I preferred. Both are good places, I just liked the charm of the B&B better.

The website is http://www.lapoesia-cinqueterre.com/index.htm. We stayed in "aspasia" which was more spacious than two of the other rooms. The suite is on a different floor and also has more room. We loved it there. Clean, well located and very sweet service from the hostess, Nicoletta.

I advise you to check Trip Advisor since there are some mixed reviews of Amici.

Did you check Monterossonet.com? There are lots of B&Bs listed that you might not know about. Do stay in old town if you can.
