Help with Italy itinerary

We have 15 nights, family of 4, flying into Venice and out of Rome. We want to spend around a week in Venice, around a week in Tuscay (Montepulciano base) and then the last day in Rome (i know, but thats all the time we hav). Wondering exactly how to divide our stay. 2 nights in Rome instead of 1? More nights in Tuscany than in Venice? TIA

Is there a reason for just one day in Rome vs a week in Venice - why not five days in Venice and three in Rome. Rome you can't even begin to appreciate in a half day (assuming you travel that day to get there)

We are travelling with a 4 year old and an 18 month old. The 3 day in one place thing isnt going to happen so we needed to pick 2 bases. We also arent going to be able to see Florence, or several other places on this trip-we had to choose.

I think a week in Venice is way too long. But...everyone will have a different opinion on this of course. It's all preference After 3 days in Venice, we walked everywhere and were ready to go see something new. It's beautiful, don't get me wrong...but if I were to spend more time anywhere, it would be Tuscany. So many hill towns to explore, coastline, vineyards, and the food is simply much better than anything in Venice (think homemade vs. volume restaurants), and the countryside is just beautiful. I would also spend more time in Rome. At least 3 days if you are trying to keep it to a minimum.

With two very small children, a week in Venice is a very wise choice. I can picture you sitting in a campo, happily watching your children play with others there.

We also wanted to take a few daytrips from Venice...Padua, Verona, etc....but I agree that there are many more daytrips we would take from S.Tuscany. I really feel as though we will just have to skip Rome on this trip...aside from the night before our departure. So maybe a couple of nights added to tuscany and taken from Venice.
