Help with food allergies Taormina

Can anyone tell me major types of ingredients people use in Taormina. I have a nut allergy and have card printed in Italian, but was wonderiing main things they use. IE in greece stay away from the Baklava etc. Any help would be great. I will also be very careful even with the advice, don't worry.

Hayden,
Is your question whether pignoli = pine nuts (yes) or what are pine nuts?

Here's a description I pulled up when I googled 'pignoli'

http://desires.com/1.7/Food/Pignoli/pignoli.html

It is, as the name implies, the seeds from a pine cone.

Is there a safe way you can find out if you are allergic to pine nuts before travel? They can be found in most large supermarkets and grocers like Whole Foods or Trader Joes. I love to sprinkle a few on a spinach salad, use to make a pesto or even snack on.

Another thing to watch - a lot of the chocolate (my favorite food) in Europe contains hazelnuts - and not necessarily even recognizable pieces of whole or chopped nuts but rather as a flavoring.

Hayden, I can empathize! I am allergic to all foods in the Apiaciae family, which includes herbs and flavorings like cilantro, cumin, fennel, anise. As you can imagine, it is almost impossible to make sure that these ingredients are not present in prepared food. To be safe, when traveling I order food with no sauces, unless the waiter speaks excellent English and I already know the ingredients (like Hollandaise, for example). You are smart to travel with your card printed in Italian, as it is amazing sometimes how unexpectedly the offending food products pop up! Nowadays, people put cilantro in everything.

Thank you so much. There is no safe way to tests nuts by trial and error. One day I ate almonds and was fine the next my throat began to close. This was two years ago and I am 30. So much for the best thing to eat. Pizza is still on the list though.
