another option would be to look at the Roads Scholar website. The tours have an educational approach, and they generally stay 2-3 nights in one location. They have tours for active and less active adults. A friend did a hiking/walking tour in the Cotswolds and Cornwall this past year.
The CIE tours are pretty decent too.
If you have a full two weeks that is 14 nights from the time you arrive, or more you could manage to see a bit of Scotland too. You could perhaps go to Glasgow or Edinburgh and see about flying home from Scotland rather than having to take a train back to London.
I would recommend that you look at a few guide books at your local library as it will help you decide where you want to go and what you want to see in Wales.

>>We may even consider renting a car.<<
If you do, you'll be more easily able to stop when and where you want. You could rent one when you leave London and stop at Stonehenge on your way to Wales.
Since you're considering a car, here's a link to my trip report from earlier this year. As you'll see, we were part of a group tour, but another woman and I designed our itinerary.

Bilbo, I've never used the traveline site before so just tried to give it a spin. I put in a hypothetical journey from Glasgow to Portree. I was told to take 2 trains, a 6 minute walk and a coach. The Scottish Citylink site gives me a direct coach, Glasgow to Portree, same time or less.
Since I've never used the site before, and would like a way to find the best possible, least expensive routings, please tell me what I may be doing wrong in this search. I also notice that one can apparently not actually buy tickets on the traveline site, or did I miss it?
