Traveling to Spain after Christmas and am having a tough time understanding how to book trains from madrid to Toledo then Sevilla then Granada and back to Madrid . The website is super confusing. Any ideas?

It's a snip, (but possibly only if you have guidance). There is no 'booking', but you can certainly purchase in advance.
Concise guide - http://tiny.cc/0gpnv
And as there is no indication where you are from - http://tiny.cc/5ynb6 - which covers all known problems, for some with card payment.

You don't necessarily HAVE to purchase tickets ahead of time, depending on the days and times you plan to travel. On our recent trip to Spain, I purchased the AVE tickets Sevilla-Madrid ahead of time, and the others at the station.
I couldn't get the Renfe site to work for me, despite all the guidelines, but then discovered that the RailEurope prices were the same for the time and day I had in mind. So I purchased through RailEurope - much easier!

We purchased them at the Renfe ticket office in the airport as
soon as we arrived. I think it was in Terminal 1 but I have heard that there is one in Terminal 3, also. I researched all
the schedules beforehand so we could show the agent the dates,
routes and times that we wanted. In our case, we purchased a senior discounted ticket before the individual tickets so
we got the lowest price.

It's alwys best if you can purchace your tickets at Renfe in advance to take advantage of the discounts, but thisis not always possible because of the problems with the website. If you have any problems you can always buy your tickets at Petrbax.com.
