Help with Amalfi Coast/Rome itinerary for May 2013

I think your new plan sounds great, and I agree with Peter that you should take a day from Rome and add it to Positano. We just returned from a week in Positano, followed by 2 days in Rome. I love Rome but once we got to Pos I really wanted to just cancel that portion of our trip and stay in Positano.
Both the Miramare and Marincanto are midway up in the town and have great views - which is one of the best things about Pos. If you have an extra day, catch the Da Adolpho boat (the one with the red fish) at the main dock and spend a couple of hours at Laurito Beach, lounging in the sun, playing in the water and having a marvelous lunch!

GiacintaG, so happy to be of help! I'm glad my highlighting of others' trip reports pointed you to Naples: team effort. 
From my own experience, we loved staying in (quieter) Amalfi and were happy with our choice. But while our hotel had a sea view in every room, I'd have to agree with Weadles that the views from Positano are even more spectacular.
As for Sorrento, take a look at the location of your hotel on google maps. If it's closer to the water, take the hydrofoil from Naples. If it's in the main part of town, I'd take the train (or a taxi). Turn on the "terrain view" or better "street view" in google maps and you'll see that it can be a steep walk up from the pier - you'll certainly be getting some good exercise along with that relaxation on this trip!
FWIW, we were planning on a day trip to Capri, but ended up reluctant to leave the A/C once we were there. Never made it to Capri!
That was due in part to the wonderful day we spent hiking the Walk of the Gods (Sentieri degli Dei) above Positano to Praiano. We had brought sturdy walking shoes with us, knowing we wanted to experience this trail - but we were lapped by a grandmother in sandals carrying a toddler in a hiking backpack carrier! The hotel gave us box lunches which we ate on a rock overlooking the sea; there are also picnic tables scattered about up there.
The "walk" is actually a system of trails, so if you google it, you'll find results that include Sorrento and other towns. If you're interested, I can provide our route...
If hiking's not your thing, at least take the local Positano bus up to Nocelle. There's a beautiful restaurant just off the parking lot at the end of the line, and you can walk the narrow "streets" of the town that form the beginning of the Sentieri degli Dei.
Of course, the bustle of Rome was a bit of a shock after 10 days in more relaxed environs. However, once we were in the swing of things in the big city, I wished I had 6 days instead of 4 1/2! So it kind of depends on what you want to see and do there, but IMO less than 3 days would make me leave it out entirely - like what ekc said.
