kenderina writes: "...I always smile when I read "ocean views" because we just have a little portion of the Atlantic Ocean here (Cadiz province and Galicia in the north) , all the rest is sea ..." You left out Huelva Province!

It's a matter of semantics. In Spanish 'mar' is used to describe the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, the Mar Cantabrico (some of Galicia (Lugo), all of Asturias & Cantabria). For me, the beaches on the mar Cantabrico (north coast) are the best in Spain.

Here in Phila we go down to the Jersey SeaShore even though it is the Atlantic Ocean.

Thank for the toprural site Viajero2. Sbrownell...Barcelona is a fabulous city but looking at your "love the ocean, historic places, and good food and wine". Hard to beat Basque cooking, manchego cheese with quince, the Rioja wines (proximity to France's famous wine region)and seascapes. With two weeks you could comforably cover both using the Acela Hispeed train North and South I would think.

Thanks, Ned, I'm going to study semantics this year and I'm very interested on these questions But we don't say "mar" to the Atlantic , that's "oceano". And yes, you're right , I left out Huelva , some friends of mine will kill me
I also love the Cantabrico beaches (well, I love everything on that coast).

I was really impressed with that site also. I've done Gites in Provence, Umbria/Tuscany and Castellina in Chiati and that certainly beats hotels. Lisbon, Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona and Santander were many years ago and I loved the countries. My hope for SBrownell is that no matter where they go that they enjoy themeselves and relax.

Madrid can be very cold in the winter but I think it should be OK in late October. We went at the end of March this year & it was hot & warm in the daytime, in the sun, but we needed warm jackets at night; and it was similar the two times I went to Barcelona at Easter. I imagine late Oct will be similar. Not beach weather, though.

I've been to Barcelona twice and liked it, think it is a 'must do' but prefer Madrid.

If you are interested in wine you may enjoy the Rioja region and/or Jerez.
