Help w itinerary? Venice and beyond...

We are headed to Italy at the end of September and will spend 10 days traveling. I have been to Rome/Florence/Venice, etc. but my husband has not and he would like to see some of the sights.
Our home base will be Venice because we have family there and can stay with them.
10 days is not a lot of time to do/see everything and we know that we will take another trip hopefully soon - my question is - does it make sense to stay north around Venice - I am looking for suggestions of what to do AFTER Venice. Or should we venture down to Rome for the last few days - or maybe rent a car and drive?
Any help would be appreicated. T.I.A!

Even though you are planning to come back, I would say, for your husband's sake, go explore at least Tuscany for a few days. It's not so far from Venice (a few hours by train). Just to give him a taste for it. Then again, I have not traveled much in the north, so I'm sure there are some wonderful places to go and see around there, too. Do some research and see, according to your tastes, what you all would most enjoy. Of course, Rome is my favorite (went for the first time recently), and I have to suggest that you take him there, too. But, if you're going back for SURE, I guess you could put it off.

DL - How many days will you have after Venice?

Personally I'd probably stay in the north and spend time in the Dolomites, Lake Garda, Verona ...

Steve - We have not yet planned our trip but I would like to spend 3 full days in Venice - which will include Murano, etc. The names of the towns you mentioned in the north - would I be touring / seeing sights? What is the pull ? I am not being snarky - just want to know! Thanks.. Daryl

Hi dl,

I suggest 4 days in Venice, 5 days in Florence (daytrip to Siena, daytrip to Bologna or another town in Tuscany)
Fly out of Florence or Pisa.
