help w/german road trip!!

Been to Germany twice--can't wait to take my husband there!! Renting car in Frankfort and want to drive south(through the Romantic Road first)Baden Baden sounds great--Heidleburg?? Need suggestions on where to stop/see on the way and then best route to return via the Rhine valley. I want to stay in Ausmenchausen (sp??) and see the entire Rhine
area. Last 4 days of the 14 will be taking the train to Prague from Frankfort. I've read most of the postings but trip itinerary seems to start in Munich. I don't think I want to spend time there, but wouldn't mind going on to the Alps area--but where?? I am looking for quaint--charm--B$B's. No shopping;castle trail hiking; walled cities; wine gardens...HELP!?! If I can nail down a good itinerary, I can go into search-for -details mode. Specific first hand info on spas (baden baden) would be great! We like to be outdoors.

Well, let's see if we can bring some order to your plans:

First, spellings: Frankfurt, Heidelberg,Assmanshausen

Now, how do you plan to travel? by car or train?

As to itinerary, get yourself a good map and follow below:

The pretty part of the Rhein is a stretch of about 40 miles, from Koblenz to about Bingen. The rest is many long stretches of industrial plants.

Baden-Baden is really out of the way.

If you want to go by car, you can go Frankfurt, Bingen, Koblenz along the Rhein. Then along the autobahn south to Heidelberg, from there along the Neckar river (nice castles)to Heilbronn. From there on the autobahn to Rothenburg. From Rothenburg to Munich and drop you car off there, or go by car to Passau, Regensburg and drop your car off there and take the train to Prague.

If thgis appeals, let me know and I'll give you more details.

---Baden Baden is a great stop...take a rest and wonder around. While you are there in the to Strasbourg France. Well worth the drive, it's not that far from Baden Baden

---Heidleburg I thought was nice. Hit Bad Wimpfen too if you can (drive towards Heilbronn).

--If your looking for quaint and walled, look no futher than Rothenburg ODT (ob der Tauber)lots of neat things here.and the bakery in the main square....Das ist Deutschland! It's def. a tourist spot, but we still loved it. Hit Nuernberg and Ansbach while in the area.

---Alps area----Garmisch is is Oberammergau. There's a tiny back road that leads you from this area to Linderhof Castle...I don't remember the roads number...but it's a great drive, only about 45 minutes to an hours drive, and puts you driving trough the mountains and drips in to Austria where you'll come across a lake view.

--Wine--- Alsace, Tokay Pinot Gris. <grin>
Rhineland Pfalz if you go during the harvest time they have wine fests all over. Mosel Valley is outstanding I hear, but never went there.

--- Praha (Prague)---Oh I'm green with envy! I can't wait to go back. It's my fav. place. We've been five times now. You'll wish you would have planned more days in Praha.

What ever you do..have fun..Prost!

TREPLOW: I am driving. Want to go to Romantic road first, divert to Baden Baden and then drive up to Rhine. How do I do it? Is there time in 10 days to take a quick trip to Lucerne?

On your Rhine section, I would recommend a short Rhine cruise, from either Rudesheim or Assmanhausen to St. Goar or Boppard and back, you can see the castles much better from the ship than you can a car. We found it easier to park at Assmanhausen than Rudesheim, just leave your car on the street next to the dock. There is a castle at St. Goar that you can explore. There is a castle above Kaub which has been converted to a hotel (Gutenfels).
The drive down the Neckar east of Heidelburg is very scenic with several castles you can explore on foot.

My spouse and I will be traveling from Prague to Munich on a Monday morning this coming May and we are looking for a Gasthaus in a community within an hour by autobon to Munich's International airport. Our flight departs at 10 AM and we will need to drop our rental car and do the normal airport checkin. So, my guess is that we would check out of the gasthaus about 6:30 AM and drive to the airport.

Any suggested place/village? We'd want to arrive late in the afternoon and have dinner and a last beer or two and retire to a nice clean room.
