Last September we drove from La Spezia, up a long road, narrow mountain road to Riomaggiore. If Riomaggiore is typical of the 5 other Cinque Terre villages you will find things to be picturesque, old and crowded, but not too modern. The public rest room was literally a "2 holer", and we held out until we got back to the modern port city of La Spezia where you may find very nice rooms with advance reservations. We did not have any, it was near 6 PM and we were desperately looking for a room. By we turned of the highway 15 miles north of La Spezia into the very small town of Brugnato (not on most maps). For about $50 we got a nice room at the Hotel Dei Tigli with a balcony over looking this 800 year old village with a population of a few hundred. Breakfast was served by the Italian family owners. We woke up Sunday to church bells ringing over the town square with a saint's statue serving as the town center piece. I highly recommend Brugnato's Hotel Dei Tigli for an Italian experience within a few miles of Cinque Terre's 5 villages.

Brenda,
My husband and I stayed at Hotel Nuova Riviera last month. I see that someone else suggested this place, so I just wanted to warn you not to stay in rooms #1 or #2! We were in #2 and it was very noisy; both are right next to the office and breakfast room, plus the key rack was right outside our door so we heard every guest coming and going. On the plus side, the Sabini family is very nice and will give you lots of info on the area.

The town of Santa Margherita Ligure is about one hour north of the Cinque Terre and about an hour's hike from Portofino. It's a lovely town & is larger than any of the CT towns, but next time I would probably opt for staying in the CT. There were a couple of times we wanted to dine at a recommended restaurant in the CT, but we couldn't because we had to catch the train.

Have a great trip!

I am going to be in that area in early October and will be staying in Levanto, a 6-minute train ride from the "first" of the Cinque Terre villages. I have never been there before, but Levanto is supposed to be charming. I'll be staying at a bed and breakfast called Villa Margherita by the Sea (http://www.villamargherita.net/).

Liz

Liz

I stayed in the Hotel 5 Terre in Monterosso in April. The room was small, the bathroom even smaller, but it was still in the acceptable range. I remember that the drinking glass in the bathroom wasn't clean, and the same one was there the second day, too. Still, it's in a good location (though without a sea view), the breakfast was good, and the staff was extremely nice. If you bring a plastic glass to use in the bathroom, it can still be a good place to stay. I don't think they have a website, but their phone and fax numbers are listed on one of the CT sites.

If you write Kate at [email protected], she'll find you a private apartment someplace. We got her address off her web site and she found us an AMAZING apartment in Monterosso for £100000 a night. tell her I sent you and tell her hi!

Hi Brenda,
My husband and I visited the Cinque Terre in Sept of 99. I did lots of reading prior to our visit and decided upon Levanto. We stayed 2 nights at Hotel Nationale in the center of town. I communicated with Angela via e-mail several times in advance of our visit. She speaks excellent English and was most helpful in our planning. We drove throughout our visit and had no trouble locating the hotel. They parked the car for us at a minimal cost. The room was large and clean tho at the front and was slightly noisey. Meals were included, and they were fabulous! I felt I knew Angela when we arrived, and she even contacted Italian relatives for me. It was a 10 minute walk to the train, and from there a very short distance to the first village. The beach was less than a block from the hotel tho we did not spend time there. We would stay at this location again.
PJ
