I may be totally wrong, but I also have verizon and as I understand the International ($10 per day of use) plan it works just like at home so one needs to dial like you would from home. No one 'has it' unless they specifically sign up. Not sure what your verizon agents told you.

In addition to the one you mentioned, janisj, there is a $65/phone for a specific amount of data, which, I was told, would allow me international calling in both countries. What no one knew to explain to me is that these plans work within each country or to the US, but not between countries! There is a SEPARATE plan, called the ‘Together World’ plan, that allows calls between the countries (outside of the US). But no one, until I worked with the Global agent, was even aware of this plan.

We're just back from London and Paris and have Verizon on our IPhones too -- any calls we made from hotels were automatically Verizon WIFI calls. I suspect that's why you were able to call from your hotel and not outside.

I am so glad to hear you got your phone back. I hate when an experience goes like the one you just had.

I have Verizon and use it overseas. So far it's been ok but now that you mention it. I had no problems calling home but while in Iceland, I tried to call my tour company for a tour the following day and couldn't. It was giving me a message I couldn't understand. I wonder if this was the same issue you ran into

cilburke, that makes sense. By that time, I had configured the WiFi, so I think you’re right.

sassy, I believe thats what happened to us. We either got call failed or messages in French which apparently was a wrong number message.

OK -- good to know about the $65 plan -- I have Verizon and have only ever used the $10/day plan. I have a trip in Dec w/ a few days in London and a river cruise in Germany so I'll have to compare the different options.

Yes, that is correct.

We signed up for the international plan prior to a European trip summer of 2018. For $10 a day it was supposed to include data and phone - same plan as at home. We set it up with a Verizon tech assistance person online. Nothing worked - and luckily for us the car we rented had an unexpected GPS - because we had planned to use the phone as a GPS, but the cell phone would never connect to anything when we were away from WiFi.

This summer, we returned to Europe, and again I talked with a Verizon employee, only to find out there is process one must complete on one's phone to actually activate the international service, even if you have already signed up for it. Depending on what kind of phone you have (Android or iPhone and model) - going in to settings and resetting a few things. We followed the instructions, and everything worked like a charm - we had our regular plan's data and phone ability for $10/day only on the days we used it. We did have to dial the international codes for the countries we were calling - just as if we were in the US.

Progol, I'm so glad to hear that you got your phone back!

Your experience with Verizon may be helpful to many people here, as it sounds like the regular customer service people are clueless about the different plans!

Something seems odd. When I did the Travel Pass international plan, I was able to call from england to france with no problems. I didn't have the need to make the reverse calls, but I simply followed the online instructions for my calls. I followed the email instructions sent by the Verizon agent I spoke with (like scdreamer) and no problems. If you didnt get or read the email instructions, I would agree it wouldn't work.

apersuader,
Believe me, I followed instructions to the tee! And I did set up my phone correctly. It worked fine within each country, but it didn’t work between England and France. I then contacted Verizon, using the chat line. For nearly 2 hours, the agents were unable to help me. They kept telling me, “you have an international plan”, and went over the configuration. They then sent me to the Global help service for Verizon, and that agent was the one who told me the plan that I had did not include calling between the countries, only within each country or to the US.

Perhaps you had another plan. It seemed odd to me, too, but this is what I was told, and after that, we had no problems.

The thing that surprises me is that all telephone companies have not automatically realized how fast the world is changing and are still proposing these weird limited schemes.
