Help: Train from Amsterdam to Paris

I am meeting my husband in Amsterdam for a long weekend...Thurs to Tuesday in May. He has been to Amsterdam before and will have been there for 3 days ahead of me this time. We are thinking of going to Paris Friday thru Monday. My husband mentioned the T.G.V. train. Please tell me how to do this. Do the trains fill up? Can we just get our tickets for the train while in Amsterdam a few days before??? Should I go ahead and make reservations at a hotel in Paris? Any suggestions for a great place to stay? I would like to spend less than $200 per night, but like a nice place. Thanks for your input.
Cindy

Yes, get your ticket one hour to sevral days ahead in Amsterdam. Get schedule info at

www.raileurope.com

or

www.sncf.com (France)

or

www.ns.nl/binnenland/start.cgi (NL)

or any other country in Europe at

http://mercurio.iet.unipi.it/misc/timetabl.html (note no "www")

and yes, I advise making reservations for your hotel in Paris. I am not really an expert on hotels in Paris, but I have had a good experience with Hotel Royal Elysees or with using the booking service at www.webscapades.com (but not for this hotel, in particular - - I don't think it is in their "portfolio").

Best wishes,

Rex

Best wishes,

Rex

Train between Amsterdam and Paris takes about 4 1/2 hours.
London to Amsterdam is best by plane. www.easyjet.com has cheap fares if you book long in advance or are willing to travel at "strange" times.

I took the TVG train last April, Amsterdam/Paris/Amsterdam. Reserved by specific seat number (don't get one of the backward-facing seats unless that's what you like You may also request non-smoking car.). Total cost was $136 plus $15 transaction fee charged to my credit card in advance, paper tickets mailed to my home. Call 1-800-722-7151 or try www.railpass.com. If you board the train hungry, hit the cafe car early as they may run out of most of the good stuff early on. Or pack snacks. Seats were roomy, clean, and comfortable. An enjoyable trip.
