Help .. Paris at Christmas

Hello Fodorites,

My family is considering taking a trip to Paris around the Christmas holidays. Questions...
When is the best time to fly to get the best rates? Christmas Day, right after, return when?
What is the weather like? Is it too cold? We spent last Christmas in NYC and didn't find that too cold.
Lastly,(and I know there lots info on this already, I did search) I was wondering how you chose the particular arrondisement you like to stay in? I am trying to decide this then begin looking at different hotels.

Any other thoughts or tips I should consider?

Thanks!

Lynn: I was in Paris last year right after Christmas. It was rather cold and wet. A lot of tourists, also locals on holidays. Must-sees-places were crowded.
That's why I avoided them. For central location try to stay in the 6th, Saint-Germain or Montparnasse area.
But you can stay in almost all arr. However, I would avoid 18-20th.

For general info check out
www.parisavenue.com
www.paris-touristoffice.com
www.paris.org

Usually, around Christmas time, there are a lot of concerts (in churches) and other cultural activities. Streets and shops are nicely decorated as well.
You will love it.

Lynn: I forgot. Try to make hotel reservation early, if you choose to stay in a very popular area like the 6th. Like this you will be sure, your first choice(s) will work. You can still cancel, if you have to (which I do not hope for you).

Paris around Christmas time is likely to be gray and drizzly as indicated -- but some of the streets are decorated -- always outside Galeries LaFayette, sometimes in the St. Germain neighborhood. You can also watch the skaters [or join them!] outside City Hall. [Hotel de Ville] And you can do your holiday shopping with the Parisians.

As far as airfares, unless there is a last minute sale, my experience is that international fares go up in the holiday season, just as fares do in the US. But then others here are better than I am at smoking out those $300. fares.

I spent last Christmas in Paris. I am planning to do the same this Christmas. I had the best time. Just walking around and exploring Paris. It rained most of the time--but still had no regrets. It was not cold. I stayed in the 7th. I went to museums (crowed but okay--be sure to buy the museum pass online before you leave) and Church on Christmas day. Also, attended a concert at the Church later in the week. Paris was very festive--lights and lots of displays for children. This was my third time to Paris and the most enjoyable. I intend to spend every Christmas in Paris. My only regret--not staying through New Years. I intend to stary through New Years this time, however.
