Going to Rome soon and had to tell me husband <BR>spaghetti and meatballs is not an Italian <BR>dish. Anyone know a good place for spaghetti?

if you look hard enoough you will find a place that caters tp tourists and sure enough there will be spaghetti and meatballs on the menu. the food in these places tends to be only fair. you can get great pasta with all kinds of sauce everywhere but without meatball. also yoou might explain to your husband that the starch course is usually served seperately from the meat or fish course. when the relatives come here they find it unusual to have everything on the same plate at the same time. mange bene

Meat balls can be found in Italy, but I'm not sure about the region where they are more typical. They are called "polpetta", or "polpettini" when they are smaller and many. <BR> <BR>There are meat sauces in Italy, like Bolognese and Ragu, served with pasta, but I do not recall seeing "polpetti" and " spaghetti" together in any menu. <BR> <BR>Buono appetito, <BR> <BR>S <BR> <BR>S

Look for a "spaghetteria" (spaghetti restaurant). Mostly, in Italy pasta is served as a primo piatto(first course). You normally order another couse after it.(But, you don't have too.) <BR>Try the L'Archetto, via Dell'Archetto a couple of blocks from the Trevi Fountain. They have a menu of about 100 different speghetti dishes. They don't expect you to order anything else. But, I don't remember meatballs being one of them. Your husband will have to try something different. He will have no shortage of choices in Rome. He will be so sad when he gets back home that he can't find good pasta there.

Many restaurants have fixed price 'tourist menus' that include 'american italian' food although i don't recall seeing meatballs. Spaghetti yes.

During my covert activities throughout the peninsula, I have indeed detected eveidence of true tractitional dishes consisting of pasta and some sort of tasty ball or patty or nugget of flavored pork and other meats mixed with other ingredients. Perhaps such culinary treasures were brought to the peninsula by Marco Polo, or perhaps wer perfected in sicilia based on the traditional coking of the middle east and north Africa.

If I'm not wrong, it's a Sicilian recipe. <BR> <BR>Another possibility would be ordering two courses, the first being spaghetti and the main course being polpettini, and asking the waiter to serve them together. Just trying to keep up with my colleagues in covert opps. I believe that if one closes one's eyes and wishes very hard, and sings "On top of spaghetti, all covered with cheese..." one's wish of finding spaghetti and meatballs living together in peace on a plate.

Silly, silly Reginald does not understand there is such a thing as truth and counter-truth and counter-counter-truth. That spaghetti and meat balls is so American that is not Italian any more does not mean that it was not and is not Italian first. a true counter-counter-counter agnet can find the real thing. If only we knew Cheryl's man, we would hunt it down for him.

Of course... husband would be very distressed if said meatballs WERE to roll off the table and onto the floor... we in covert ops are looking into the problem of AWOL meatballs in our current mission, and hope to be able to report back soon that all meatballs currently absent from duty in Rome will be located and reinstated shortly. <BR>
