Help me pick an Island

Hi, my husband & I are thinking about our hols next July (first two weeks). We love the Greek Islands. We've been to Rhodes, Zante, Crete & Corfu. Corfu being our favorite, we stayed in the small resort of Barbati the last two years running. We want to go to a smallish island with beautiful scenery. We'll hire a car as we want to sight see. We want beaches but not big resorts. Somewhere with a few tavernas & restaurants, not crowds. We want to go self catering. We love the mountains although we'd want to stay be the coast. My husband would sooner fly direct to the island we holiday on rather than have to go by ferry. We're not too keen on island hopping. We are in our forties & like to chill out by a pool or beach some days then sight see, travel though small villages, try out the tavernas & see the history. Any ruins make my husbands holiday!
Any suggestions?

Crete, even in high season it's easy to get away from the crowds

I loved Naxos and would go there again. I've heard great things about Sifnos and would very much like to go there. It's smaller than Naxos and has less tourists.

See: Matt Barrett's Guide http://www.greektravel.com/sifnos/

Have a look at the Laskarina web site. They do the accommodation too.

Or, a palce I've been thinking of for a while is Karpathos. I have a friend who goes there a lot and loves it.

hi Sheila

Unfortunately, Laskarina is closing down at the end of November. This years customers were its last. I received an email from them only a few weeks ago advising me of it's demise.

They were superb to deal with and I am sorry to see them go. Details are at:-

If you liked Corfu so much, have you thought about Paxos? You can't fly there directly, you have to fly to Corfu. But then it's only an hour on the hydrofoil from Corfu Town, so not all that horrendous - and it is worth it!

Have a look at my Paxos page here for more info - http://tinyurl.com/7q3kb
