Help!! How do I get to the Amalfi coast from Milan?

I will be in Milan for a week for the world rowing championships. During that time I would like to visit the Amalfi coast, but I believe there is no train service to there. Apart from hiring a car (which I am reluctant to do) is there any other way of getting to there from Milan?
Thank you.

Take a train to Napoli or Salerno (www.trenitalia.com). From Napoli, take a local train to Sorrento, then a bus, or from Salerno, take a bus or boat. It's too far to do as a day trip from Milano.

In addition to the train, you can fly from Milan to Naples in about an hour. (The train ride from Milan will take you about 6.5 hours.) From Naples airport you can take public transportation to Sorrento and the buses that run along the coast, or arrange to hire a car and driver to take you on the famous drive. I agree with the above poster that doing this as a day trip is not worth it. You really need a minimum of 2 full days to really see the coast and the small towns along it.

There is lots to see and do in Milan and you could also easily get to Lake Como by train or bus in about an hour from Milan. That might be a better choice for a day trip from Milan.

Thank you, Geoff and cicerone. I wasn't actually intending to do a day trip. I was thinking of having a couple of days midweek. Your advice has been very helpful.
Kind Regards.
