Have they considered buying an airfare/hotel package? For instance, the Go Today website (www.go-today.com) you can get:

Round trip airfare on Air Swiss or Delta Airlines or available air carrier
2nts hotel accommodations in each city: Venice, Florence and Rome
Continental breakfast daily
2nd class rail between Venice/Florence and Florence/Rome
Hotel taxes and service charges

All this for only $1349 each (& that's choosing the A level of hotels).
Try some travel agents. I couldn't find any fare to zurich under $700, nor with the airlines neither in the internet (experia, travelocity, orbitz, etc). I did not try priceline.com where I have found good deals in the past but you have to be flexible on your travel date/time. Then I tried calling several travel agencies and one got me a ticket for $570 including taxes. At the beginning I wasn't sure about the agency and just made the reservation for 24 hours, then checked directly with the airline and our names where in the system and actually they told me the price I was paying ($570). When I ask the airline how the agency can give me this price when the airline is quoting me over $700, the airline said that sometimes the agencies buy promotions and they still have the seat even after the promotion is not offered by the airline. So try some agencies and you may have some luck.

How can any discussion of air fares to Italy exist in the absence of specifying the city of origin?

The currency is also not listed.

I think that half the city of Edmonton would travel to Italy if they could get fares for 825 dollars!

This is not an attempt to be a smart aleck, just trying to bring this thread back to some connection to meaningful facts and figures.

And to try to contribute SOMEthing of value to this thread, be sure and consult the cheap flights forum of www.eurotrip.com - - but be sure to give more info when you do.

Best wishes,

Rex
basically, i found a fare for $825 US on one of the online sites, expedia, travelocity, orbitz, or cheaptickets. i know 825 is probably not bad at all, considering i need them for approximate dates of june 28th-july6th, i am afraid to try priceline because you never know what you'll get. I think what i was hoping for was a fare between 500-600 rt for each parent. i am going to try using AAA, and maybe some local travel agents, but if anyone ahs any suggestions, please post! oh and we live in northeastern PA, so we would hope to fly out of philly, newark nj, JFK, or something in the vacinity.

If your parents don't mind a connection, by far the cheapest way to go is through London. You could probably get a fare to London for around USD450-500. You can then buy a cheap ticket from London to Italy on one of the low cost airlines such as GO, Ryanair or Easyjet. My return ticket on Ryanair from London to Brescia was 22 pounds.

I quite agree with monica that traveling via london will yield tickets priced generally as she describes. And I am very surprised that Maira thinks you should spend over $1000 for two nights hotel and some train tickets?

$1349 - 825 = 524 x 2 = 1048!!

Where is the bargain in that?
Well, I could have sworn I read and re-read the post from a-z but the Murphy's law of posting really let me put a big bozo post up there. I see now that it is SIX nights hotel, not two.

It would not be my choice to go with the package price as quoted, but Maira's suggestion is NOT ill-advised.
