we will be traveling by train between rome and paris and have about three days to get there. can anyone suggest a fun place to stop? maybe a small town with some sights? we will be traveling in oct./nov. and welcome any suggestions. thanks.

myself and a friend made that trip in dec. and stopped in florence. although not a "small" town it was our first trip to italy and we thought it was full of must see sights. <BR> <BR>we took the early am train from paris so we could see the countryside and got to florence about 6pm. only about 2.5 hours from there to rome.

have been to Florence twice befroe and loved it. Any other suggestions for something new though?

Does anyone have any other thoughts? I am having a hard time making up my mind between somewhere small in Italy, France or Switzerland. Any advice appreicated.

I believe that the rails will go thru the town of Brig in southern Switzerland. This is a storybook town in the Simplon Valley & just a short train ride up the mountain to Zermatt & spectacular views of the Matterhorn!! <BR> <BR>When you come out of the train station in Brig you feel as if you are walking into a picture postcard!! <BR> <BR>Enjoy your trip wherever you go! <BR> <BR>Bob

I took the train from Bologna to Paris last September. We went through Milan and Torino before entering France, but I prefered Bologna. It is very low key and easy to do with a one or two night stop. There are not sights on the order of Florence, but you are repaid by the lack of tourists and the associated tourist trade. I recommend a climb up the Asinelli Tower, one of the famous 2 towers landmark in the center of the city. Have a cafe' in Piazza Maggiore and stroll down the surrounding pedestrian streets to see real Italians doing their shoping at the local store. Bologna is also the home of the oldest University in Europe. Then there is the famous cuisine: Tagliatelle Bolognese, tortelli, lasagne, etc. Read up and see what you think. <BR> <BR>If you are interested in a smaller destination. Try Arezzo in Tuscany. It is on the train route from Florence to Rome, although you will have to take an older EC train instead of the Eurostar. I also highly recommend Orvieto in Umbria, with its fantastic cathedral and dramatic situation on a cliff of volcanic tufa. This is only a 1/2 hour from Rome by train, so you could even do that as a day trip. Or stop one night in each on your way to Rome. Have fun.
