HELP! Best Way from Waterloo Station to Heathrow

What is the best way to get from Waterloo station to Heathrow airport. I will have luggage, so I'm looking for the easiest and fastest way there. I was thinking of taking a taxi to Paddington Station and then the Express Train. How long should I expect that to take?
Thanks!

With luggage, the best way (but most expensive - £40+) is taxi all the way. Second best way (and considerably cheaper) is the way you described.

Taxi all the way could take over an hour, especially during rush hour traffic. Taxi to Paddington could take a half hour (again, rush hour traffic) but the Heathrow Express takes 15-20mins to the airport, and leave every 15 minutes. I don't know what the cost would be on the taxi portion of this, but Heathrow Express is £12 one way.

The cheapest is train from Waterloo to Feltham and direct bus from the Feltham station forecourt to Heathrow. Time less than an hour, price whatever a 6 zone one day travel card costs this year ~£5.

We took the Feltham bus/rail Heathrow link in February. It was so convenient to our destination in Waterloo that we wondered why it was not publicized more. As an alternative, I would think twice about the Heathrow express thing. We did that one other time from Gloucester Rd. and wished we had just paid for the cab straight out to Heathrow. It was early morning and the fare would have been quite reasonable, but we already had our tickets bought for the Express. To each their own. If it were me, I'd base my decision on the time I had to get to Heathrow and how much I wanted to spend. Considering the efficiency and price of the Feltham link, if it were me, I probably go with that. Check out the info on the link on the Heathrow page and then make up your mind. I hope that helps. -- Dale

I'm just back from making that very transition. Over the years (I live in the US, have family in England) I have made many trips from Heathrow to Waterloo, and tried all the variations. While taxi is of course the easiest, it's expensive if you're traveling alone, and worthwhile if you have a family.
I tried a new option this year-- complete with wheely luggage -- and was pleased . I took the Tube (Piccadilly Line) direct from Terminal 4 -- you can take an elevator (lift) down to the Tube level, and walk onto the platform. Single ticket is less than 4 pounds ($6), and you can buy it in the terminal. I took the Piccadilly line to Green Park, changed there to the Jubilee line -- it's then just 2 stops to Waterloo. The Tube problem is unexpected stairs up and down as you transition from one line to another with a bag that is fine on wheels, but heavy to carry. Notes from my journal: Just one stair up and down at Green Park, and at Waterloo it's all escalators (no "Mind The Gap!") Only time that wouldn't work well is if you'll be on the Tube in rush hour (say between 8 and 9 am, 5 and 6 pm). If you arrive early morning, no problem: if you arrive between, say, 7:30 and 9 you could take time to fortify yourself with a leisurely breakfast in the terminal before you tackle the commute (Caffe d'Italia was good, I thought).
If you want to spring for the Heathrow Express, it's fast and easy but not cheap -- then you could take the Bakerloo line direct to Waterloo from Paddington (still some stairs to deal with though).
So as almost always, it comes down to money vs. convenience...
Happy landings!

Amanda - If you're traveling alone, the tube/train/taxi options are all good. If you're with a party of two or more, consider the ease of a hired car....I used Ray Skinner's London Transport a couple of months ago both price and service were great for my group of 4 people with lots of luggage.
