Help an inexperienced traveler!!!!

I have recently found the least expensive airline tickets for British Airways through an online company. Here is what I want to do and the cost of those tickets:

1. Jul. 2nd -- Chicago to Paris (1 stop in London) Departure: 5:30PM Arrival: 11:30AM

2. Sept. 1st -- Munich to Chicago (1 stop in London) Departure: 7:35AM Arrival: 1:50PM

Total Cost: $1256.60 USD

Is this good, bad, or average? Can I get it better someplace else?

Dear Scott,
My experience with an "open-jawed" ticket was very different. For the Christmas holidays, I flew into Paris (Northwest through Detroit) took the train to Venice and flew back from Venice (I think on Alitalia, through Milan). Paid less than $700. I could not manage this on the internet - I used a Carlson Wagonlit travel agent in Wrigleyville. It's possible that your tickets are more expensive because of the time of year... but $500? Maybe check with an agent to find a better deal.
Good luck!

We flew American to London from Chicago, took a train to Paris, then flew from Paris to Chicago for less than $1000 a piece in June last year---a time of high prices. Looks like you could get a better deal somewhere else.

It does seem kind of high. We're leaving for Italy in 2 weeks and we paid $468 apiece through Expedia.com. (NYC to Rome; Venice to NYC on Air France). Could just be the time of year you're flying though.

The price is high, without question. My guess is that it is because of the length of stay.

Air fares are extremely complicated. You would be well-advised to consult a knowledgeable travel, one with solid international air fare experience.

twenj

It never hurts to shop around further, but based on the July departure and length of stay, I'd say this is a very good fare for 2001 peak-season travel on this itinerary.

I booked about the same trip, STL to MUC in June returning CDG to STL in July. I went thru a travel agent who used a consolidator. Tickets cost just a little less than $1000. I booked these tickets in early March and havn't seen anything cheaper yet.I believe the summer travel season is what gets us.
good Luck, Dave

Contact your nearest travel agent and ask her to get you a consolidator ticket-should be much cheaper that on line and your agent might be able to route you another way that could possibly be less money. Make sure agent has lots of knowledge in international travel. A straight ticket booked in the computer at any agency(without any inventivenss) will cost the price you wrote in your post. You are going in high season for travel to Europe. I called today for regular prices in/out Nice for Sept. and got quoted 1137.00 which for coach is outrageous. So I'm gonna try my agent who has consolidators tomorrow. Good luck

I agree that the price is too high. I booked a flight on-line directly with United and found myself an open jaw ticket from Hawaii to Paris and return from London for $950. Do your research and I'm sure you can find a better deal especially since your flying out from Chicago.

Scott,

Are you insistent on flying British Airways? Is that implied in your initial question? I think that you can find a better price.

Some better ways to go about this:

1. you might consider a cheap airline to get you from chicago to the Northeast (US) if you can't find the fare you want from Chicago. not cost-effective if you have to overnight (in the US), but that would probably not be necessary.

2. Consider a simple roundtrip into London (or Brussels), then connecting onward (by train or by plane) to Chicago, and back from Munich. Look into http://www.europebyair.com or http://www.ryanair.com or maybe Buzz or Go.

Best wishes,

Rex
Try www.onetravel.com, I plugged in your dates and cities and came up with a fare of $999.58 including taxes on United/Lufthansa. I bought open jaw tickets from them before with no problems.
