This seems to be your first post ever here.
Tip - Re Post your query with a more descriptive title like
Need Help Planning a Week Outside of London -
otherwise with a generic Help title many knowledgeable folks who would make helpful comments may skip it by.
I'd suggest taking the train to York, onto Edinburgh and perhaps back to London via a stop in the fabled Lake District.

Nice post title
I don't know if you'll get the best replies with that one...
PalenQ's suggestion is pretty good - you do have time for 2 stops, possibly 3.
How will you be travelling - by train?
What do you like to see and do?

I think PalenQ has a very good suggestion. York is so different! Don't think it could stand a week though.
Cardiff - NaaaaaaH!
Edinburgh - can't really comment as I have only driven through - down the Royal Mile and on to the rest of Scotland.

Depending on what you want to do, and how quickly you want to move around, you could also rent a cottage in Yorkshire, Cotswolds or Cornwall, or Devon....
When are you going, how much do you want to spend, what are your interests???
