Heidelberg to Luxembourg

I was considering this as a daytrip. Mapquest says 2 hours and some change. Can this be possible? It's sending me on the A6 - I know it takes nearly an hour just to get from HD to Kaiserslautern - that's a drive I'm used to doing.... It seems like it should be a lot longer...

Thanks

Via Michelin says just over 2 hours on a route that goes through Kaiserslautern.

I've done exactly that leaving Heidelberg mid morning only to get stuck in a stop and go traffic on the freeway around Kaiserslautern. It might have been a fluke, but it was an unforgettable nightmare. We made a 3 hour stop at Idar Oberstein and arrived in Luxembourg around 6 pm.

Viamichelin and other routing software calculates the time under "perfect conditions", i.e. no road works, congestions, etc, and with an average speed of around 120 kmh. To meet that average, you will probably have to drive at least 140kmh whenever possible to compensate for possible delays on congested parts of the freeways.

While the last half of your trip (Kaiserslautern to LUX) usually has less traffic than the leg from HD to Kaiserslautern, I would say that you can calculate 3 hours for the whole trip to be on the safe side.

Don't forget to fill up in Luxemburg since gas is much cheaper there than in Germany ;-)

Thanks - that's what I was figuring - at least 3 hours.... maybe a bit too far for a day trip with no particualr reason to go.
