The Marriott in Heidleberg is great. They have a concierge floor that serves a great complimentary breakfast with cheeses and smoked fish. They also have a "happy hour" with sausages and beer and wine -- all complimentary. A wonderful hotel in a wonderful town. It is right on the Neckar River and a short walk to the Altstadt.

I stayed three years ago at the Marriott in Heidelberg. It is a nice hotel by the river, and has a large buffet breakfast that while expensive helps get a good start of the day. The only draw back is that it is a little out of the way from the old town center and the castle. You'll love Heidelberg it is a great city.

I spend about 5 weeks per year in Heidelberg. I've stayed at the Marriott a few times. Great location - I usually walk into town, but then take a taxi back at night. If you decide to stay there - see if you can get one of the rooms that look onto the river. Beautiful view.

I've not heard of the Hotel Erna - I'll check some of my sources and see what I can find on it.

Depending on when you go - try the Best Western Alt Heidelberg. It's less than a 10 minute walk from the Altstadt and on a very quiet street. Prices are usually reasonable and the staff is very friendly.

Post here if you have any other questions, I'd be happy to help.

Lisa - I checked the hotel website for the Erna - I wouldn't consider this to be within walking distance of 'downtown' Heidelberg. You could drive easily enough, but parking can get tricky down there, the garages fill up quickly, especially on the weekends.

Right in the middle of town is the Zur Backmulde Hotel. We have stayed there many times as recently as December 01. Rooms are recent remodels and you have about 1 block to walk to Alt Stadt. Breakfast in the morning and it has more of a German feel to it than a Marriott. Just a thought.
