It depends on what you mean by not too expensive. Airport hotels tend to be a little higher then anywhere else, afterall they have a captive audience. There is an IBIS at Heathrow and their rates are not too bad. The hotel rooms are very small and basic tho. The Novatel is middle of the road accommodation wise. We stayed at a Sheraton one time (there are two of them), one is more expensive then the other, can't remember which but you can look at Sheraton's web page. There is a Crowne Plaza which has a 99 pound per night rate including breakfast, we just reserved that for our next trip as we have to stay overnight. There are a number of others, but none exactly a bargain. You can go further afield but then you run up taxi fares so it's a wash I think, besides if you have to make a flight in the a.m. (assuming you do) I don't feel comfortable being too far away - traffic around Heathrow can be murder. Incidentally, there are no free shuttles to the hotels that I know of at Heathrow - they are serviced by a "Hoppa Bus" and it's 2.50 pounds per person per ride, they run about every 15 minutes.

We stayed at the Jarvis International (on Bath Road - a short taxi ride away from Heathrow, cost about £5). The room cost about £70 but this was 2 years ago and it was a weekend (which I think was cheaper than weekdays) - but it's definitely cheaper than the Sheratons and Marriotts (but more expensive than the Ibis).

Thanks Everyone for your speedy responses.
We are actually from the U.K. but we want to drive down to Heathrow the night before our flight to the U.S.A, so we don't have to worry about getting up really early and how much time to allow etc. We will have our car until we drop it off at one of the off-site car parks the following morning, then the car-park has a shuttle bus to whatever terminal.
I just wondered who had stayed in any of the hotels as I've never flown out of Heathrow before.
By not too expensive I was thinking of under £80(GBP).
Thanks again for any suggestions.
(Not many people from the U.K. read Fodors do they? They should its great, its helped me no end planning our holiday.)

In Windsor, just a few minutes from Heathrow, there is a Marriott, ANd a Courtyard Marriott...and both I'm sure are very comfortable. The Weekend rate is VERY reasonable....the weekday rate very pricy, Im sure. We usually plan to depart on a weekend and stay at one of the large lovely chain hotels on the weekend rate....I feel sure these have a shuttle to the airport.

I agree with Mariana about Windsor, whenever weare in the UK and need to be near Heathrow we find a B&B there for about 40GBP , it is convenient and cheaper than staying right next to the airport. Peg.
