Has anyone recently stayed at the Mayfair Intercontinental?

We are booked to stay at this hotel in July. We have two teenage children and had to book two rooms. They said they could not guarante we would have connecting rooms. I was wondering if anyone out there has any input on what to expect.
Thanks!

We stayed here a few years ago and loved it. Of course it was a huge step up from the place we were staying at...

We had booked another place over the internet for about $170 USD/night and we were very disappointed to say the least. The room had two cot sized beds and the room itself was no larger than a shoe box, it had no AC, and London just happened to be in the middle of a heat wave. Well, We endured the torture of being in what felt like an oven for exactly two days when my husband decided enough was enough. He told me to pack my things we were out of there!

We ended up going over to the Intercontinental despite having prepaid for five nights at the other place, at that point though we were prepared to face the penatly, and pay whatever price necessary to get out of there. Boy were we glad we did, because our room at the Mayfair Intercontinental
was opulent. I think you and your family have made a wise choice and you won't be disappointed!!!

We loved it so much we can't imagine staying anywhere else!

By the way, did you make your reservation with them directly or with a different web site?

Anyway, have a wonderful trip!
Karen

Karen, I'm always worried something like your experience may happen! Glad to hear good things about the Mayfair, it's more than we want to spend, but it's the last four days of a sixteen day Europe trip and we want to be comfortable. My husband called directly and booked with the hotel.
Thanks for your input!

They used to say that Brits would go to the Intercontinental when they wanted to "pretend they were staying in America."

In terms of the connecting rooms, I would definitely do whatever it takes when I checked in to GET two connecting rooms...that may depend upon the time of day you arrive..certainly ask about the possibility...would you consider switching the children to a connecting room if it became available for the last three nights, etc.?
I am sure a lot of people will tell you that staying in this "chain" hotel means there won't be any "charm" unless you consider comfort (and I certainly do) to be a very big part of whatever "charm" really means. This opposition soften seen here to chain hotels is interesting given the fact that many, many hotels are actually chain properties.

The Intercontinental is, as I recall, fairly well-located near public transport (if that's an issue) although I think the outside architecture of the place is somewhat "moderne" but who cares? I went over there for their breakfast a couple of years ago from the nearby hotel where we were actually staying. It was a big buffet type of deal (which I like)...seemed pricey at the time but the food was good. Hope you enjoy your stay.

I'm aware this hotel is a chain we are actually using some member points for two nights free. After traveling and staying in 6 different hotels from Germany and Italy, we'll have plenty of charming and unique hotels!
Thank you for your response.

We just stayed there in early June having bid on a room for $65 per night on Priceline($75 with the Priceline bonus $10).

I assume they have different classes of rooms and I assume Priceline customers get the bottom tier of rooms so I wouldn't describe the room as opulent, really more along the lines of what I would expect at a Holiday Inn. But it was comfortable, clean, the bathroom was modern and quite nice. Only bad part about the room was the a/c, which we needed, smelled really bad, probably doesn't get used much. The location was great, a 2 minute walk to the Green Park tube (have to negotiate a small flight of stairs if you are bringing luggage) and 5-10 minute walk to Buckingham Palace. We even walked back from the theatre district one night as it was quite nice out.

There's a grocery store across the street (not open on Sunday)where you can grab beverages and pastries if you don't want to pay additional for the breakfast.

Kristi, $65! Are you kidding? We're paying 200+ for each room. We thought that was good deal for a luxury hotel. I'll complain if we get a room with your problems.

Nope, not kidding. And for $65 per night I was extremely happy as I've paid over $100 for dumps in London. I don't think I'd ever stay in London again without trying to bid Priceline. Just have to be willing to accept the risks associated with it.

Just stayed at the Intercontinental Mayfair last week with three teenage boys. We were lucky and know someone that used to work there and my husband and I were upgraded to a suite. The guys had a regular adjioning room. The a/c worked great, the shower pressure was really strong and the room terrific. I would definitely recommend it. We paid 135 for each room. It is a short walk to the Green Park tube station. Walk around the corner to the Red Lion Mayfair Pub and have a nice lunch. Our sons 20 & 19 walked to Leicester square almost every night, where there is always activity.
Enjoy!!

Stayed there two years ago for four nights.

Plusses: Nice, large, clean rooms and VERY comfotable bed (down pillows, down sheets, etc.); two blocks from Tube Station; centrally located in London

Minuses: "Stuffy" staff and guests (not best for kids); poor concierge service (take a Fodor's book).

Overall, highly recommend.

Really sorry the secret is out! We've been staying here (three weeks at a time, twice a year) for ten years. It's a lovely hotel with wonderful service and I've never felt the staff to be a bit stuffy. It's our home away from home and our London family. Enjoy!

I just stayed at the Intercontintental Mayfair and had a great experience. Good service, very comfortable, accomodating staff. I had a good experience with the conceirge, they kept loading me up with marked maps and advice for my daily round of questions. They arranged for theater tickets and were helpful when my husband called to change our reservation day and airport transport due to a flight delay (long, unpleasant story!). In fact, my husband called the wrong London Intercontinental hotel originally, and not only was it resolved but the Mayfair called my husband back to assure him that everything was taken care of.

Sometimes the check-in staff doubles at the concierge desk, but they will track down answers for you. I agree that its extremely well located.
