Has 1864 The Sea Captain's House closed on Santorini?

I've saw 1864, The Sea Captain's House in Santorini on the Conde Nast "Hot List of Hotels and thought it would be a wonderful place to go for our 10th anniversary. I went to their website and e-mailed in a resrevation request two weeks ago - no answer. I emailed again last week - no answer. I tried to call them by phone -- disconnected. Am I correct in assuming that they have they gone out of business?

My guess is that they're just closed for the season. Although their website indicates that they are open during the winter months it is my experience that this information was included with the best of intentions but in reality they have chosen to close until April like most of the small hotels in the Greek Islands. There is not enough business between November and April to keep so many hotels open for business. Also, although I've never stayed at the Captains' House, I know it's location well. If you plan your visit during the busy months it might be a bit noisy, since it's situated so close to the pedestrian walkways in Oia. You might want to consider some of the other luxury hotels like Perivolas Villas, Katikies, Oia Mare, Esperas, Atlantis Villas or others on the list I'm providing. Keep in mind that some of these places require good physical condition because of all the stairs necessary to come and go from them.

Thank you both for responding to my badly typed query. We have booked a room at Perivolas Villas which look gorgeous.

Your help was very much appreciated.

When are you going to Santorini? I have also booked in Perivolas. We are going mid July (12-16 if I remember my itinerary correctly).

We'll be there for four nights in mid-June so I'm afraid we won't have the pleasure of meeting you.

Have a wonderful trip!

Mary,bro,debby-- why did you pick that place. We are trying to pick hotels for early May-- not looking for loud or partying place. It is for our honeymoon. We want upscale but not stuffy. Do you have recommendations for places to stay? Thanks.

Signmeup, have a look at this website. There are many hotels that will work for you. Oia is the romantic village with the most traditional beauty.

P.S.-The Atlantis Villas has been taken over by Katikies, and is now one of 3 Katikies properties in Oia.

Signmeup: My choice for Perivolas was based on researching this website and Tripadvisor - pouring through many reviews before making a final decision. Even at that it was hard to make a decision as there seems to be so many wonderful places to stay in Santorini. It was overwhelming.

A few things that affected my decision were location and we opted for a swimming pool as we will be visiting in mid July and may wish to plunge into a cool pool at the end of day.

Perivolas has a wonderful website - www.perivolas.com.

I hope the villa is as wonderful as the website depicts as this is the property we are splurging on.

Good luck in researching your hotels. It is hard to decide!!

1864 The Sea Captain's House in Oia, Santorini is NOT closed, sorry Maryxxx for any confusion. We are open year around and hosted guests during the island's 'Quiet Season' of Nov thru March - including weddings here in Feb and tomorrow. If you send me, Tony Mosiman - owner, an email [email protected] I will be happy to invite you to our "Ambrosia & Nectar" restaurant in Oia during your June stay at Perivolas - with a complimentary bottle of wine from me as an apology for your emails going into 'a void'.
I'm sure you will really enjoy your time at Perivolas - it's a lovely spot as well. www.santorini-gr.com
